Epic movie alert: War of the Arrows

I watch a lot of movies... mainly so I can act like a know it all when bapu comes over.

Last night, I stumbled on this South Korean epic on Netflix: War of the Arrows

It was a bit more violent than I enjoy, but the story telling, the editing, and the sound effect cues were something to remark about.

It had all the drama of a shoot em up gunfighter action movie but there were no guns and so there was an entirely different sound scape. I was fascinated by the experience of feeling familiar with the pacing of the dramatic action while it was juxtaposed with a refreshingly unique collection of sound effect cues.

The storyline exploited and celebrated every situational device that you have seen in popular action dramas, but it did so cleverly and with a precision that demonstrated the director was an experienced and confident story teller.

I was surprised to realize that I had become enthralled and I finished viewing the movie with the opinion that it is a genuine epic motion picture.

If you take the time to view it... I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

best regards,
mike

I heard of it.  I almost picked it up--but didn't pull the trigger.  I like those kinds of movies.  I'll probably go for it next time I get a chance.

That will go on my list of movies to watch. I checked out the trailer and it looks to be very well done. And I like those sorts of movies.

I'm a fan of Asian cinema in general, in particular Chinese and Korean action and creepshows, so thanks Mike for that tip. I'll put it on my queue.

Here are a few of my favorites of the top of my head, all of which are an Oriental twist on familiar Western genres including the western:

The Good, the Bad, and the Weird (China)
A Woman, a Gun, and a Noodle Shop (China)
A Tale of Two Sisters (Korea)
         Death Note (Japan)

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.
