Just guitar stuff...
I was disappointed in that I had a design idea very much like this but also very glad to see it because it gave me thoughts about the design seeing it completed...anyway, thought some may enjoy seeing it and I'd like to know how others feel about it. Be sure to scroll thread to see the second one too. :) Here.

That got more interesting the more pics I saw! Very cool to stare at, but I've gotta wonder if all those gaps hurt the tone. The one near the bottom was very nice as well! (Same question though.) It DID give an idea. They have this spray which can make anything look like an expensive stone (like marble for example). I think it might be interesting to make a guitar that looks like it's made out of a heavy stone when it's actually something light like korina (black limba) or even your basic basewood.

I like how that looks...the way the thing is layered is very intriguing...

That's awesome Mike. Are you planning on making one like that then?

Not sure about that design. I guess the gaps could be used to store your cables and stomp boxes during transporting? That other one (with the metal plate for the controls) seems more like art to me. I guess I'm mostly a traditionalist.

Craig when you get into "tone" everything can sure get opinionated. There are things that we can imagine that will definately question the tonal properties of a guitar- I sure wouldn't think one with a cement body would have good tone- but the guitar is wood. Wood that has been and is still considered "tone" wood. Should a guitar be constructed of material that has a history of being used and is considered a guitar then usually the major factor in tone is from the player IMO and very many agree to that. We know that opinion is supported very much by the masses hearing and knowing the sound of a popular artist such as ______ I'll say Carlos...we know it doesn't matter what electric guitar he plays...he's going to sound like Carlos and everybody will know it's him...the guitar doesn't mean anything other than it's what he choose to play. Naturally he needs a "guitar"..you surely know what I mean. My first considerations for the tonal properties... Neck- type of wood, type of nut and string angle, type of wood for fretboard. How it's attached or neck-thru design. Type of head and angle. Pickups- type and how they are mounted. Bridge- type and how it is mounted. Angle of strings leaving bridge. How these are answered will be important to how I continue thoughts of body. With that...the layered body effects on tone or resonance compared to solid body "wings" is definately something I'd like to hear for myself....reason I was thinking about the design before seeing his build and still - because I'd like to hear for myself to determine the effects if any.

Steve I have a design that I've working on ...very similiar but still different. You can imagine how excited I got seeing those...most woderful because I felt that at least I wasn't being crazy. :) And in answer: Yes I am. The concept of "panels" for me came not to long ago- you may remember a few months back when...I know I'm slow...but I learned of "steampunk". That is when the design hit me. NOT so much like the one I linked to but so similiar that it was both, as I said, a disappointment and very cool to see. Seeing his has been fantastic in showing me what I like and don't. Gave me plenty to take back to the drawing board. Bapu you don't know how close to my thoughts you hit. My last design change was based not only on the voids being a hassle...in the sense of cleaning and such - but also of strength, resonance and comfort. There is also the procedure of assembling and finishing of the pieces that must be worked out.

IMO, the body of the guitar becomes far less important when you use active pickups like EMG's. So what about making an electric in the style of those new electric acoustics (or violins) which just have basically an outline? Like this: Except, I'm thinking of a single frame piece that's only attached on one end so that it has a little bit of spring to it. Almost a hint of a body outline, yet usable (like when playing sitting down).

There's something about wood. Having a place to rest ones arm....a place to anchor a finger... the beauty of it... That one has none of that. It's hollow and looks like the designer was just trying to be different with no considerations of the player....IMO.

That is a fantastic piece of workmanship. When I saw that guitar it seemed to remind me that there are only a few pieces of quarter sawn plank wood that are sized for a one piece guitar body in each log. There's a lot of wood left over after the quarter sawn or riff sawn chunks have been picked out and you gotta do something with it. There's a chunk of swamp ash over at Warmoth that has me drooling. It's routed for some over sized single coils. I don't want it, or need it... but it's the kind of piece of wood that makes me think "that could be a keeper". The fancy guitar linked to in the OP doesn't do the same thing for me. Something for everyone!!! :-) best regards, mike

What do think that wafer design would sound like? I just don't see the vibrations-frequencies joining through those... spacers? A guitar becomes part of you when it's pressed against your body-chakras... soul. I would think it would feel thin.

I've got a buddy named Nicky Devlin that plays acoustic slide guitar through the cheapest (he paid thirty bucks I think) POS box I've ever seen. He plays all his electric stuff through a Jay Turser (cheap Chinese) strat copy I gave him when I used to be a dealer through an old Peavy solid state amp. And yet he has better electric tone than any of my buds with...as Nicky says, "good equipment" ...and his acoustic slide sounds as sweet as anyone I've ever heard. I still think you need good tools...hey, they're a tax write-off! But it's in the hands of the player. Always will be.
