RME card 1 of 2 going AWOL

I've got two RME HDSPe AES cards on a Gigabyte motherboard, running Producer 8.5.3.232. Occasionally one of the cards won't have output and in order to get it back I need to reboot. I'm running ASIO and have up to date drivers and firmware on everything.
Not that it means anything, but while Sonar isn't able to output to that card, I'm able to open something like iTunes and it has output from that card. I'm running wordclock from card 1 to card 2, card 1 set to internal and card 2 set to WC, its usually card 1 that drops.

I'm looking for what other troubleshooting I can do.
Thank you.

You're using the card for Windows sounds? That might be your problem right there.

I have the windows sounds set to 'none'. Is there another setting I should set to address this?

I've tried lots of different sequences of events to see if I can get it to be repeatable, and I'm not picking up on anything. It sometimes happens when I click the External Insert in and out, sometimes it will come back on line if I repeatedly click an EI in and out.

Also, another traumatic thing that has started happening is that random projects become unplayable for no apparent reason. It will appear to open normally, but the program will freeze with the project half open, take about three minutes, and then appear to be open, but won't react at all to space bar or selecting play. This is a huge problem as some of these projects have many weeks of work on them. I'm reinstalling the entire program now to see if this fixes the problem.

I'm not using very many plugs and the PC is showing 10% of CPU and 5% of disk usage. I'm mostly using EI's with outboard gear.

    updates:
I've installed Reaper and it appears to have the same problem, just takes longer to manifest. After using it for a while, the primary sound card stops functioning. But I can open iTunes and it will have output no problem. To me this is starting to point to an issue with the RME drivers, but that seems unlikely given that they state that up to three cards should work.

Other things I've since tried include:

moving the vid card out of the primary 16x slot and putting the problematic card there. No change in behaviour.

    disabling all NIC's. No change.

reinstalling all RME and video drivers. No change

Running the Windows video driver instead of the NVidia driver. No change.

Mobo BIOS is not up to date, but the current BIOS does not address any PCI issues. I may try to update the BIOS, even though I would prefer not to touch it unless as a last resort.

edit to add: when Sonar has the rough start and won't play or react at all, if I crash out of it, go to Device Manager and disable one of the cards, Sonar will then start and play flawlessly.
