32/64 bit versions differences?
hey all, i'll be moving over to x64 in the coming days/weeks/months, and wondered if anyone who'd done similar has any insights or gothchas they'd care to share? i'll be going 64-bit-only on the VSTs so hopefully will avoid any bridging issues... thanks in advance :) p

When I did this many of my VSTs were not quite 64-bit yet so a few bumpers there. But when I got X1 I went 64-bit only (minus a few essentials still on 32-bit) but otherwise, everything went smoothly and the whole music making experience got a lot better. So just make sure that all your plugs are 64-bit if available, try not to install the 32-bit equalients unless you have to and remember that jBridge is a great, cheap alternative to Bit Bridge if you have some issues regarding this. In general, if you go 100% 64-bit I don't see why you would have any issues. Good luck

Bear in mind that this list hasn't been updated in over a year, so some of the information has since become outdated. I noticed a few products listed as x86-only that do have 64-bit versions available today (e.g. Waves and Camel Audio products).

If you're using 64Bit plugins exclusively, that eliminates most problems.

I went completely x64 several years on XP,(driver nightmare) now Win 7 but apart from the VST situation never had any trouble. The VST thing is much better now than it was. Invest in JBridge if there are any x32s you really need, well worth the pittance it costs IMHO.

Hmm... that article is from 2010. I wonder how accurate it still is. I see it says a lot of the Focusrite stuff isn't supported but supposedly there have been a lot of Focusrite fixes. I'd better go over there and ask a few questions before dropping the coin on a Scarlett. I mean I don't really need those plugins but I'm not sure if that will effect the hardware somehow... and their plugins/extras/mixer are really cool looking. Another thank you for the link.

sure it's an old thread, but it's a good start, and it's easier then me scouring my vst & download folders... and i'd be surprised if anything on the list as x64 changes back to 32 ;-)

Beepster, which Scarlett are you considering again? And what are your alternatives?

@pwal... true enough and it's a great list (someone worked REAL hard on that). I see what you mean by if what you are looking to use is listed as compatible you'd be good to go. Sadly the stuff I'm looking at says incompatible so I have to dig further and see if there have been any changes. @skylightron... I'd like to get the 18i6. After seeing that list I put in a support ticket with FocusRite just to make sure everything would work properly with my system. They've popped in here before saying they've updated things so everything should be cool but now I'm realizing they didn't really specify the Scarlett series. They mentioned Saffire. So ya know. Better safe than sorry. I hope they get back to me soon so if there is a conflict I can look around some more. As far as suitable i/o's for my purposes... well I don't really NEED much for now but the 18i6 would pretty much do everything my Layla G3 does. The only difference is the amount of outputs is less but I won't be running out to a mixer with this rig anyway so it doesn't matter too much. Otherwise I could get away with a 2-4 input (that has at least 2 multi inputs with pres), 2 outs and MIDI in/out so I can hook my old DX-7 up as a controller. I'm mostly going to be tracking by myself so that would cover it however with the 18i6 I could mic up a whole drumkit or record a band if I needed to which is why I want it. It's also gotta be under $300. Initially I was looking at the M-Audio Fastrack Pro which does all this for $250 but it's plastic which is a turn off and I'm not sure how nice the pres are on it (from what I've heard the Focusrite pres are great and likely suited to the sound I'm looking for). Seth mentioned a Roland box but it was like $700 so that's out but I looked around a bit and they seem to carry some smaller boxes for under $300. I'd have to go through them all to make sure they have one with everything I need. I guess I could take a look at what Echo has out now too but I'd imagine that stuff is a little pricier. MOTU... probably too pricey as well. I know there are other manufacturers out there but these seem to be the big players with the best quality stuff so I've kind of kept my search limited to them for now. However it would just be really cool if I could introduce that Scarlett into my system without any problems so then I don't have to worry about upgrading merely because I don't have enough inputs to record a band should the need arise. I'm trying to get this all sorted out before I move because once I do I will have ZERO cash to spend on any more recording toys for probably a year or so. If anyone has any ideas on other devices I should look at if the Scarlett doesn't work out I'm all ears. Peace.

I love-hate 64 bit sonar x1. Love the extra capacity it gives me to load up live effects. Hate the rare but annoying crashes when using v-vocal.
