Can't Suffer No Fool (Blues)

Back to the Blues!  Here is a bit of a number about a cat that is having a struggle with his darlin;.  It is along the lines of the slinky, Cool Blues genre (at least that was the intent).  I also tried to throw in a bit of a Studebaker John feel to this song.

I am still entrenched in the battle of wits between my new computer, new sound card (E-MU 0404 PCIe), and an old me.  I do believe that I'm losing the battle.  With great effort and confrontation with my two opponents I did manage to get this number don (to some degree).  So, I would be very gratefull for any feedback.

Thanks

This wasn't the urban rap tune I expected from you Fred. Seems like you have perfected your style. Sounds great to me.

nailed the groove here, which is enough for me. For some reason I really picked up on the super laid back drum fills, nice!
This groove gives a superstition feel to it, worth trying a clavinet on it playing the riff, see how it comes out!

Hey Lynn -- don't be depressed , the Blues are supposed to cheer you up   ;>)   --- anyway B. B. King once said that.   Thanks for listening and the kind comments.

Robby: I'm still thinking about an urban rap tune ---- I definitely don't have that perfected!!!!  Thanks buddy.

Cian:  I appreciate your listening, the good words, and the suggestion but I don't know if I could handle a clavinet  -- all those black and white keys confuse me.

Hi Tom.  Thanks for the listen and comments.

    Thank you Shad.

Thanks very much for the kind comments Kev.  I was going for a Jimmy Reed meets Studebaker John feel.  I hope I got close.  Thanks again.

    Hi Freddy,

Another awesome song. I didn't hear a single thing wrong with it. Mix, singing, playing, mastering, was all great.

That E-MU 0404 card is an awesome card. I have the PCI version which is a little different than the PCIe.

I haven't used it in years because the PCI version isn't reliable with anything after Windows XP 32bit.

I was sad the day I had to yank it out of my PC and go with something else.

If it's giving you troubles, make sure both the PatchMix DSP and the driver updated. IIRC the ones that shipped with it didn't work right out of the box. That may apply to the PCI (not PCIe) version only, not sure. The hardest part of getting it to work is the routing, but once you get that figured out you'll wonder how you lived without it for so long.

I'm an inch away from getting rid of my M-Audio Fast Track Ultra and getting an E-MU 0404 PCIe like you have. I need to build a new PC first.

I used to set it for 24bit/192kHz and transfer my old LP's to my computer to put on to CD. There's been a lot of arguing back and forth about the benefits of 192kHz, but I can tell you 100% for sure, there was a huge difference between it and 44.1kHz on the 0404. It may have been an anomaly of the 0404 card, but man it sounded crystal clear.

What I did was do some simple test tunes to get the feel of it, then saved my routing settings as a preset so I just had to double click it once to get up and running.

Good luck with it! It's an awesome card.

Good blues tune. It's got all the elements.

I have an EMU - 1820M which was one their high end interfaces that they recently discontinued in favor of the 1616M.  Really nice preamps.

You can pick up NOS 1820Ms quite cheap.   If you're using a card, are you plugging a preamp into that?

    Hey Freddie - love this!

your guitar track has a lot of noise on it, very obvious at the beginning.  might want to gate that out.  I'd also back off the sizzle on that ride (and the cymbals) myself.

love the tune!  love the performances!

Freddy doin' what Freddy does best ! As you know I'm not a big blues guy, but I can easily imagine spending an evening with a few beers in a smokey bar ( if such a thing still exists anywhere)  and listening to this band ! Not sure that the fade at the end works - felt a little lazy if you know what I mean. Kind of like.....can't be bothered to finish it properly, so I'll just turn the volume down now.

Hi Bub.  Thanks for the kind words and for the encouragement with the new card.  Although I'm still losing in the battle of wits, the three of us (my computer, the E-MU 0404, and me) are communicating better in the audio realm.  A process in which the other two are educating me.  I am, however, losing the fight to use MIDI (and I have a song waiting that is just begging for MIDI). I have contacted the E-MU support folks but have had no response from them.  I also contacted the Cakewalk people and they have replied with some suggestions, but it looks like we might be working on this for a while.  Thanks again.

Thank you Daryl.  I am using a preamp and as mentioned above, I am getting a handle on the system for audio and recording WAV but trying to get the MIDI to work is driving me bonkers (its a short drive in a fast car).

Hey Daryl(1968).  I appreciate your taking time to listen and comment.  Thanks!!

Hello Reece.  Thanks for the kind comments and valued feedback.  You are right of course.  There is a lot of noise and I have been getting a lot of clicking in my struggle with the new system and card.  I am getting more comfortable with the balancing between Sonar and PatchMix ---- so, hopefully I'll be able to eliminate some of these errors.

Hi Paulo.  Thanks for the kind words.  I understand how you feel about the ending.  I used to listen to WLAC (Memphis, Tenn.) way back in the early 1960's.  I was a very young, wee, bit of a thing back then  .     It was a 50,000 watt station and if the weather was just right I could get it all the way up in London, Ontario (when I lived there) and all the way down in Port Charlotte, Florida (when I lived there).  A lot of the R&B and Blues that the famous John R used to play had long fades (e.g., the Meters, Johnnie Shines, etc.).  I thought it was kind of cool then and still kind of do, but I can see how it can seem lazy.  Thanks again for the feedback!

Hey Eric. Thanks a million for the kind words.  I appreciate it.

I don't see anything here that is technically spectacular. I only see a raw basic blues tune that's good. The vocals weren't over extended and fit the song well.

Pistolpete:  Yup, that's all I was going for -- the basic 1950's, U. S. Route 61 Blues sound.  Besides, I am not capable of doing anything that is near technically competent, let alone spectacular ;>)  Thanks for the feedback.

Your a very competent blues man, can't really fault the mix.

The only criticism I could give is the outro needs a little more lead, then you would have a really good song.

I'm so impressed with what the song forum is dishing up, folkelectronica, blues, power ballads, you name it.

    Keep it coming Freddy.
