Stability issues after 5 years no problem

Hey guys i have been using sonar now for about 5 years and have installed it on several new pcs throughout the 5 years, never once have i had a stability issue, but i was not doing any midi work, it was always mic up instruments and record, but here recently i have been getting more and more involved with midi, but everytime i go to edit midi, like quantize, or stretch or anything i get a message saying a fatal error has occured and sonar must close, would i like to save my work and send a report to cakewalk, well i have sent reports to no avail. any advice on how to clear this up would be great, as i am really enjoying working with midi, but when it crashes, i lose all my work and am so upset that i quit for the night. therefore lost ideas and songs. thanks in advance.

WARNING! I'm a n00b! hmm... almost sounds like you are maxing out your system's resources but (and I'm no tech) from the specs in your tagline I think you should be fine. Have you optimized your system for audio? Are you running a whole whack of synths and stuff at once? I think when editing VSTs and stuff you should use the "Freeze" option on the other MIDI tracks or whatever. That's something the Cake guys said to me on the phone. Frees up more resources to accomplish the task at hand or something.

Oh and I don't think you'll get an answer from sending a crash report. I think that just let's them know about something they might need to fix. Send in an email support request or call them if you can't figure it out. They have been super helpful for me. Good luck.

Thanks for the response! my resources are not even being close to being maxed out, my processor is only running at 15% and my ram is about 20%, last nite when it happened i have one track of dimension pro running and about 8 regular audio tracks, with no plugs on anything, i was writing a midi part to a bride of a song and got the part recorded just fine, but when i went to quantize it to tighten it up, boom thats when the error happened, lost the whole midi line that i spent 3 hours working on. i would not think it would be the driver to my usb keyboard as it dont happen while recording, just editing. hmm, its a head scratcher.

So are you sure those are your CPU/RAM usage details at the moment you are doing these edits? If you have a decent hardware monitor it can record those values in real time. The editing may be causing a spike that you aren't seeing. It still should not be happening though. Again, I'm new to this myself. Hopefully someone smarter than I shows up... and if not as I said the Cake support team are great. Cheers. PS: I'm actually curious as to your results with ezDrummer and the country expansion pack. Got anything online we can check out?

My suggestion is to contact tech support at Cakewalk. Sonar should not (and in my experience does not) crash simply because you carry out routine MIDI editing.

I suspect the reason you're not getting many responses is because no-one has much of an idea what might be going wrong here - myself included. I doubt it's a lack of PC/Windows resources though (although in Windows "resources" means much more than just cpu/RAM usage alone).

If you've not already done so, make sure you've updated Sonar to the latest patch first, then, if the problem persists, raise it with tech support, they're probably in the best position to help you.

    Sonar Platinum 64bit, Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit, I7 3770K Ivybridge, 16GB Ram, Gigabyte Z77-D3H m/board,
ATI 7750 graphics+ 1GB RAM, 2xIntel 520 series 220GB SSDs, 1 TB Samsung F3 + 1 TB WD HDDs, Seasonic fanless 460W psu, RME Fireface UFX, Focusrite Octopre.
Assorted real synths, guitars, mandolins, diatonic accordions, percussion, fx and other stuff.
