How do I separate songs?
Hey, I record my band live and end up loading an evenings worth of songs into Sonar X1 (I also have soundForge Audio Studio 10). Question: Is there a way that I can mark the start/end points of ea. song so that the CD burner recognizes this separation allowing the listener to choose between songs? Currently, I am converting each song to a wav and then combining them to make a CD with separate songs. Or......I just have an hours' worth of tunes on "one song" on the CD. I'm game for buying needed software if Sonar or Sound Forge can't do this. Thanks so much.

Are you trying for a continuous stream (like a live show CD) or snipping the individual songs so you don't get the crud in between? In the first scenario set your markers on the ruler and just mixdown/export to whatever file type you want (create a folder to save it into) then repeat for all the tracks. Now you have a folder filled with each track and you can dump it back into Sonar to add track details and whatever to each track and create a CD mix (this should be easy in Sonar but I can't detail it for you... it should be in your manual or help topics menu). If you want a steady stream I think you set your markers where you want the next track to begin without any snipping and pretty much do the same thing. There might be some special process to avoid a little click in between tracks but someone smarter than I would have to tell how to do that.

Sorry... I'm a little kerfuddled. For the full live performance and just setting track markers it should be done by setting markers on the ruler where you want the CD player or playback device to say "Track 1 ,2 3, 4, etc..." and then there should be some option in your mixdown/export menu to make it happen. Most DAWs can do that and I'm sure Sonar can as well. Check the "Export" section of the Help menu on your version of Sonar and I'm sure the details will be there for that particular function. Should be really easy.

And one thing to note about that process is try to put your markers at the QUIETEST point possible so that way if someone skips to song two they don't get an audible pop. You can drag out the clip view and put your marker where you see the squiggly vertical lines are even with the straight horizontal line. If you are snipping and separating tracks you can just do a quick fade to avoid the pops.

Sonar can't do what you want because it isn't Red Book compliant. Once you've mixed your songs to your liking you should export them all as one long continuous wave and then use something like Sony's CD Architect (which is awesome) and put your song break markers in there, prior to burning your CD.

You can do this one of several ways... For example I have a Sony CD burner that allows me to record streaming audio from any source. I simply push the track button to insert a new track marker in the streaming audio. On playback there is no clicks or pops or break in the music.... the track number simply changes and I can jump forward to a specific track as needed. In Cake: simply use the "CUT" function to divide the total project into the various songs. You now will need to export them to individual tracks (naming each one) ...I use a new folder on the desktop as my destination for something like this....it makes it easy to find them all. Now that they are all exported and sounding as you want them to sound (mastered & polished) you can use a third party CD burning software package to burn the disk with all the songs. Simply go into the disk setup menu and choose "NO GAP" between the songs, be sure the songs are in the proper order and execute the burn. On playback, the performance should be seamless with no pops and clicks or gaps and the track markers should be in the correct place to allow listeners to jump to the proper track as needed. Pink Floyd's DSOTM uses this in several places.

Great advice. I'm a little annoyed that Sonar can't do this on its own. I thought it was supposed to go from bed tracks to publishing. Oh well. Can't have it all I guess. This is the type of thing I would have done in Wavelab on the old system. Does CW put anything like that out? Bookmarked.

You can if you want your exports to be Mp3, but not Red Book compliant CD

That's a shame... still curious whether CW puts out a Wavelab type product.

Thanks Guitar hacker and Beepster, but I'm looking for a simple "get the tracks to the guys" without spending much time. I appreciate your time, though. Bristol.....I will pick up Sony Architect. thanks all!
