What FX (If Any) Do You Use on Your Bass Guitar Tracks?

Hello--

I've got a rock tune I'm just polishing up before I mix and don't have any effects on the bass guitar. I have the option to add reverb via the soft synth it's being played from and I have POD Farm and other plugs that have Bass presets, but wondered if anyone likes a certain sound to their bass?

I do want to add a little attack to the current bass, and I figured too much fx might be counter-productive to that, but maybe you have some experience? Of all the instruments I use to produce over the years, I am lightest on bass.

Thanks!!

Stephen Davis

I normally use a waves plug in on my bass guitar.. it brings out the harmonics is all it does though. Of course I use a compressor for the attack and release, but reverb.. never used that... usually bass and kick are not put thru a reverb, unless you are trying for some special effect.. sometimes a flanger is nice though

I used to work with a bass player who used a flange every chance he got. It didn't always work, but on some stuff (like Pink Floyd) it was pretty amazing.

Hey thanks. I don't want to turn the bottom into a melodic instrument for this particular track I'm working on, so I think I'll stick to the compression ala, TS64 and the like. Good to know you don't use reverb--I also don't want to weaken the bottom.

I actually did something similar to the bass that I did on the drums. I have one track with the TS64 for attack and one track without and I play them layered. That way I can adjust the levels of each track until I get what I want. It sounds pretty good that way.
