WDM/KS and ASIO output distorted. MME (32) is clear as a bell

I'm using X1d Studio on a 64 bit, Win7 ASUS i7 with 8gb RAM. I'm not sure why the recommended driver modes come through gritty and gravelly when I'm playing, but MME is fine. Anyone have any suggestions? I've tried so many things and nothing works so I'm stuck with the 32 bit driver. I'm drawing close to solving The Million Monkey theorem, one monkey at a time, but I'm not there yet, and soliciting your help. TIA ~EFaaT ツ

What audio interface are you running?
The more details you provide, the better the odds that we can help.

Have you tried increasing the buffer? That's all I got for ya.

Could be a sample rate mismatch. However as Jim asks it would help if we knew what audio card/interface you have.

The audio card is the Realtek HD audio card in the computer, and I'm glad you brought that up. What should I be using? When I switch to WDM or ASIO I no longer have the speaker output as an option, only the "Realtek HD audio output [WaveRT] 1/2." Four sets of them 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8. The ASIO driver is not native. I installed ASIO4ALL. Does that info help?

Is the audio from the Realtek HD audio output [WaveRT] 1/2 trying to go out a different port other than the speaker output?

Sample rate is set to 16 bit 44100 in Sonar and the Realtek UI.

You're not going to get good performance out of an on-board sound card. They're made for playing Windows sounds and watching YouTube.
You should get yourself a proper interface.
There's a forum member here (Beagle) that has put together a page on his website to help people decide what to look for.

Well, the problem is fixed. After searching a bit more I found out what "sound card / audio interface" really means. I have a PreSonus Audiobox USB sitting here that I wasn't using. I didn't know it was a "sound card." I'm new. I was just planning to use it for vocal recording but it had horrible latency issues and the guys from Sweetwater couldn't fix the problem for me. After reading that it is a sound card I gave it another try, figuring now that I've got X1 Studio, maybe I should give it another chance. I haven't tried recording with it yet, but it plays back snappy as can be with ASIO drivers [just realtime playing soft synths]. Very few buffers. Anyway guys, thanks for your help. I'm learning. Slowly. ~EFaaT ツ
