Vocal Hiss

Rode NT2-A plugged into a Presonus Eureka. Eureka plugged into the IO of a V-Studio 700. Mic Pre in the V-Studio set at 24 with a 20 db pad ON. (20 is all the way down and 64 is wide-open, so 24 is just barely up a bit from the bottom.) Vocal level meters perfectly. Problem: lots of high hiss though that reminds me of a Dolby cassette with the Dolby off. What's the deal? Note: No EQ on the track except for HPF filter roll-off below 160 HZ.

I did not know the 700 preamps were better and I was using the Eureka for mild compression going in. I will try straight into 700.

You an also dial in a little compression on the VS-700 right on the interface. The pre's sound great!!

Eliminate the extra step in the process.

When I first got my first (well actually the second cakewalk rig) laptop based rig.....I had a Dell lappy with a Saffire interface...AND.... I had been trying to use one of those all in one 16 channel studios with the mixer desk built in.

So I figured, since I had the Korg 16 channel mixer thing...why not use it as my mixer.  It totally overloaded the signal going in... horrible ..... so I unplugged it and sold it on Ebay.

The straight in signal with the Saffire pre's was crystal.

Konrad ...you have compression also in the VS 700 , but i tend to record without compression !! i do it all ITB , just put a ratio infinite to avoid clipping in case of a hi dynamique boost and set the thresohld to zero (use comp as a limiter) , but again if you can do it without , do it ;)

Just start eliminating one thing at a time in your signal chain until you dont hear it anymore.
