Teach me something new about X1 for the next 30 days

All of us newbies like Beepster and I would like to learn as much as we can about Sonar X1 which we chose as our main DAW to make our music. Some of us don't like reading the manual or don't have time to sit around and watch the videos. The forum seems to be a great place to learn. So for the folks here who know their X1 and would like to teach us something about X1 - this is your chance to hold your class through this thread. Anyone can contribute of course, even if you just post one thing about X1. Fastbikerboy could teach us what Screensets is all about in example. So for the next 30 days, lets get as much knowledge crammed into this thread.

    1) Read your manual
    2) Read SONAR X1 Power
    3) Watch the Videos
    4) Search for what you want to know on the forums.

I know, I'm being a smart ass. That's why the guys over at Cakewalk do Cakewalk TV/Sonar University, and right Greg took his precious time learning everything about SONAR and writing a book on it. I have SONAR X1 POWER and my biggest piece of advise. Take the time to read it.

Actually, smart ass aside. I know my vocals... When I have a bit more time to sit down and type something, I'll post some compression and EQ tid bits for hip hop and R&B, as well as any Pop/Rock male lead/backing and female lead/backing vocals. Reverb and Stereo imaging are your best friend.

Pop some corn, crack beer, watch YouTube vids.   Shocking amount of info.

I just learned that  "always echo current midi track" on the MIDI -> Playback & Recording -> Playback section will be spontaneously unchecked by gremlins and drive you (well, me) crazy wondering wtf has gone wrong .

Practice, practice and practice some more. That's the best teacher. Just open it up and start making recordings, doing sound checks, whatever, doesn't have to be anything special, just keep working with it, and when you run into a problem, look it up in the Sonar Power book. Keep trying to do different things with it and your knowledge base will grow. You'll get used to the GUI and all the quirks, and you'll develope work arounds, and work flow habits. Definitely setup a couple of screensets, I just have two, the main recording page and the mixer. Definitely watch Fast Biker Boy's video's, they are VERY helpful.

I would also add that you should search the forum instead of writing something that says "I'm too lazy to work for it so you should just bring it to me!"

FastBikerBoy has some awesome tutorial vids - YouTube him and you will get a bunch of info fast. You have as much time to read the manual as you do to read the forum.

You have time. Take the time!

Yeah, FBB doesn't contribute enough time to this forum!!!
Seriously man the videos he has already made dealing specifically with screen sets are pretty short and to the point...in fact I'd venture to say that if you were to watch them it may be less time than you spend reading this thread

i know you dont want to hear this but seriously, locate and find the sonar x1 help files and copy/paste them to your desktop for easy reading when sipping coffee before a session,if you look at one thing and practice it in that session you ll progress fast, because low and behold that one thing will lead into another, yet one thing seems to be enough not to overload the curcuits.

    videos?
heres a 3 minute tutorial on setting loop points and punch in recording for entry level users.

i made this video with the thought in mind "short length, you walk away remembering more".
thats not alway true, but for new users it definetly is in my opinion.

so it seems all the things you dont want are the things that are best for you.

Just remember Adobe's Audition is only a spruced up version of Cool Edit and doesn't do midi. They claim it's only an editor, not a full blown music production program...go figure that one out.

Heh... although I appreciate being mentioned in the OP I'm all about manuals and digging my nose into the details. I know this isn't going to be a "KABINGO! I just pooped out the greatest record of all time! THANKS SONAR!!!" type situation. One step at a time and as I've said before I intend to work through the tutorials a few times over just to hammer the basics into my skull. I'll also try to work through the relevant (to me) point of the Anderton vids. I mean I've done all the mixing and fading and EQing and whatever before... but in another program that is REALLY outdated. Now I have to learn a new program. Also because I have to incorporate MIDI and I want stuff to be a little more intricate and professional with production values just setting things to "GIVE ER!!!" doesn't really work for me anymore. Tell ya what skylightron... you and me... we'll be buddies. I'm gonna be rampaging through this stuff so everything I nerd out on I'll share with you iffen ya want. For now though I have to update my monitor burn in thread because... things are awesome but... perhaps not so awesome with the monitors.

Actually... if there is interest in it I could start a thread detailing my adventures (and misadventures) as a complete n00b using the X1 Suite. I still consider myself in the "set up" phase as I've had a few false starts so it would mostly be like someone starting from scratch. I like to keep real time logs of my progress and it would be good for my writing skills (aspiring writer I yams...) so maybe as I'm settling into a day where I know I'm gonna fire up the rig I can type up my goals and then after the day is done post my results. Might be cool.

Re:Teach me something new about X1 for the next 30 days 2012/05/28 00:22:25 (permalink)
I'm definitely not a "noob" to Cakewalk.  It's been my DAW since Pro Audio 6, and I even used the original Cakewalk for DOS back in the day.   You could say I know a bit about Sonar and DAW recording in general.  BUT...my last version before X1 was Sonar 4 PE.  The basics are generally the same, but there are tons of new features and changes, some subtle and others not-so-subtle.  Since I also added the VS-700 (I'm a lucky girl) there's even more to learn.  So in some ways, I feel like a noob all over again.

As I work, every time I run into something that slows me down, or outright baffles me, I jot it down for later reference.  Because I know Sonar so well, I can usually figure out how to do what I want to do with a little experimentation, even though I'm sure there must be a better way.  Over time, I'll learn the little tricks and "gotchas" and my workflow will gradually increase.  When I'm totally stumped, I post here.  If it seems like a bug or setup issue, I'll contact tech support, too.

The first thing I did when I finally got my new system up and running with X1 and all the extras, was start a new test project just for practice.  Throw in some softsynths, add loops, lay down a few guitar tracks, play with all the plug-ins, the ProChannel, etc.  The Help feature is very comprehensive and I can often find what I need there.  If that fails, I search this forum.

One thing, I never got a paper manual (I did get an electronic one) and I REALLY miss it.  I thought I'd get a whole box set when I ordered the extra disks to accompany the downloads, but I did not.  Of course the same info is in the PDF but it's a pain to read, IMHO (gotta get an iPad or Kindle).   I do plan to order Scott's book when I get a chance.   I've owned past versions of Sonar Power and they've been very useful.

Most of the workflow in X1 is streamlined compared to past versions...but there are certain things that throw me off.  Little things, usually, but they take time to get used to.   Overall, I'm VERY happy with X1 and look forward to learning all the little ins and outs of the new interface.

You can't whiz through X1 in 30 days by hanging around the forum and expect to get an effective understanding of this very complex program.  Like JesusMics said, you gotta read everything you can find about Sonar, watch some of the excellent videos, and try to apply what you learn in stages and chunks.

The forum is a great resource when your stuck with something specific, but it is not a general training ground.  Learning Sonar is a bit like learning chemistry - studying and lab work, not watching and kibitzing.  I kinda choke up when facing densely packed manuals too, but I found I just couldn't get the important details without wading through them.. And some of the videos by real pros are terrific.

I suggest starting with an easy project, like a 12-bar blues and as you run into questions, refer to the Help Menu or manual or this forum.

How about creating a new thread telling me everything you know about X1 in 30 days first.

I'm a noob and totally agree that to just do a simple project and work thru the blockages as they occur.
I started by collecting a mass of resources.
Links to vids, clips of good advice etc stored in a "My Music folder" and intended for reading later, but very soon found I had way more than I'd ever read and would tend to forget I had them when I needed them.
    1. KISS and do it ,do it, do it works for me and gives the most satisfaction bang for the buck and sets a permanent memory.
    2. As you run into each block, patience is a must or you might go mad with frustration.
    3. Respect for the forum folks' valuable time is essential.
    4. Power X1 is worth reading right thru to start (Mine is full of post it note tabs) because that implants the seeds of potential and when you hit a wall you will remember there was "something" on that in it.

We live in a "We do it all for you" world that tell us we can have instant gratification but time and hard work will never go out of style and is still the only road to professionalism.

    Hi there Beepster,
I think you came up with an interesting idea, if you start a thread
telling about the problems you encounter, how you overcome them,
and maybe make a 'tips & trix' table to show for struggling noobies
and struggling 'not-so-noobies (like myself), I think it could turn into
    a terrific and helpful thread!

    I'm all for it,
    please go ahead!

Yeah... I've been thinking about it a lot since last night and I think I will do it. I find writing things down, even if I don't end up going back to review the info, really helps me retain information. Kind of like why they forced you to take notes in class as a kid. It's more about making sure the info is ACTUALLY passing through your brain than having hard copies to review. Also if I were just making notes for myself they'd probably be a little scattered, truncated or filled with gaps. By typing it up for the forum I'd be more thorough and articulate. Plus it's interesting chatting with you guys and seeing various users opinions on stuff. If it helped someone down the road... well that would just make me super happy. Love helping out whenever I can. For now though I have to sort out what's wrong with my monitors. Urgh...

@strikingly handsome... actually that's not really true (depending on the exchange rate). Buying the Cakewalk stuff retail here is the same in CAD as it is in USD. I picked up the Suite for $500 and that seems to be what it sells for in the US. So, again depending on the exchange rate, it might actually be cheaper for Canuckians. Not sure about Europe though.

There had to be one reason to move to Canada and cheaper Cakewalk products than even the Americans is that one reason.

So the first "new" thing that skylightron learned about X1 is it can be cheaper in Canada.

    Well done.

@strikinglyhandsome... Don't forget the beer... and Canadian women... and most importantly, the poutine. A proper poutine is made with curds and St. Hubert's gravy. Anything less is not poutine.

I believe you yanks create a bastardized version called "disco fries". This is unacceptable.

Ya get Scott's Sonar Power Book. Last night I decided I wanted to see if I could make my own loops with my bass. So I checked the table of contents in the book for loops, and I found a section about loops and Grove Clips. As it turns out Groove Clips is what I wanted. I followed the instructions and before long I had recorded my own Groove Clip, and was able to just click and drag it to make it as long as I wanted. It worked !! Scott's book came thru again !! It's simple as pie when you read the instructions !!!
