Need Help With Interface Settings

I'm out of town usiing my HP laptop and my Guitar Tracks 4 won't work over some nutty registration issue. I downloaded the paid LE version of Sonar X1. I have a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, USB. However, I can't find where to change the setting so that Sonar recognizes and uses it. One screen says to go to the Option menu, but I can't even find that.

I know it's blasphemous to mention it here, but I also have my MacBook with me and even Garage Band recognizes the Focusrite instantly and it works fine.

Again, I'm on the road and I think now it's time for a step by step walk-through of what I need to do to get the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB to work on my SONAR X1 LE. Where is the menu where I need to start to set the recorder to recognize and use it?

Thanks in advance.

    Don,

Start by opening X1 (with or without opening a project) and navigate to EDIT > PREFERENCES.

Under the AUDIO header, check the lists under Input Drivers (and Output Drivers). Is the Focusrite USB 2.0 Audio Driver (or something similar) listed? If so, but the box is unchecked, that is the first thing to do.

You might need to run the Wave Profiler from the Playback and Recording page. You should be using the supplied ASIO driver, so you may need to change the driver mode on that page as well after the Profiler "finds" and profiles the device (I also recommend you choose Powr-3 for Dithering).

My Scarlett 8i6 gives the option of changing the Timing Masters on the Device Settings page - that will depend on which type of input you are going to use at any given time (line input to the 2i2 from an outboard analog mixer, for instance, or one of the combo jack mic/instrument inputs).

Check those settings and report back.

BTW... is that really Billy Gibbons with you in your avatar photo?

Hi and thanks. I havent' seen Focusrite recognized or mentioned anywhere in this version of Sonar LE.

I've done what you mentioned, as much as it will allow. When I get to preferences nothing shows up under Drivers or Driver Settings. The only bit depth option is 16. This is when the Driver Mode is set to ASIO. If I set it to MMS there is no driver shown. If I set it to WDM, no driver is shown. I can't find a setting that shows a driver at all. I've done the Wave Priofiler several times and it doesn't seem to do anything,. When it is finished a window appeas that says the MASTER is assigned to be silent.

I can't find where it even recognizes Focusrite. I've plugged it up, unplugged, re-plugged, and turned the whole system off and back on. It's just not recognizing it. If I'm on the Mac and plug the Focusrite up I hear a "connect" sound, and then I can see it added to the menu and its ready to use. So far I haven't found a place where Sonar even recognizes it.

Yes, that's Billy. That was taken in Biloxi, MS after show.

Thanks for the reply. If you have any more suggestions, please send.

1- turn on / plug in Audio device,
2- in windows "device manager"  is your device there, recognised and working?
3a - If it is go to 4,
3b-  If it's there but has a "!" in a yellow triangle, right click and update driver software.
3c- If it's not there, re-run any setup files for your audio device, and let it install all required drivers. Best to just go to the manufactures site and grab the latest drivers.
    Then recheck "device manager" again.
    4- Start Sonar
5- press "P" to open preferences (doesn't matter if you have a project open or not.
6- In Audio select ASIO, your hardware should be there.

Thanks Freez. You are right. I found Scarlett 2i2 in devices and it had the yellow triangle. I ran a check for software updates and it said it is up to date and using the best available driver download and it is installed properly.

I unplugged it and re-plugged it. It said "This device cannot start, Code 10."

Do you have another suggestion on how to get the driver to work and the computer to recognize it?

I went back and uninstalled the Focusrite. Then I went back to their website and re-installed it. This time it worked fine. Thanks for all the suggestions. Even though it was installed, there was a glitch of some kind.

I'm transferring over some old cassette tapes and this is workikng nice. In case anyone is interested, I only have a headphone "out." I plugged a mini jack Y into that. The Y has a mini jack "In" but the two "outs" are quarter inch. I run a stereo 1/4 to 1/4 out of each into the left and right of the Focusrite and my music transfers from cassette to Sonar just fine.

Other than that, am I the only one that absolutely HATES the Sonar is determined to have the METRONOME always automatically set as the default. I'm SICK of that thing. The metronome is the only absolute nusience I find in Sonar. Looks like they could change that so it only works when you turn it on. Mine is always set to be on by default. I've been cursing that thing since 2007.

Don, as far as the metronome... I don't use it a lot, either (except sometimes at the very beginning of a project if live tracks are being laid that I will need to sync to later). You don't even have to go into the metronome menu, though, to tell Sonar X1 not to use the metronome; simply click whichever button is lit (blue) to the right of the time display to turn the metronome off for playback, record or both. If that doesn't keep it from defaulting again when you start another project, click the "Metronome Settings" button (just below the other two buttons). In that menu, under "Use Audio Metronome", pull down the Output menu and select "None". That should fix it!

The good news is now there's a little metronome icon right up on the toolbar, so it's easier than ever to fiddle with the settings.  But yes, it's always annoying when it starts playing and you don't want it to.  It's equally annoying when it doesn't play when you expect it to.  It's a case of "can't please everyone."  :)

    Glad you got sorted.

Run the metronome to a bus channel and set it to sound on record and playback, but without count-in.

Then if you want or don't want it, it's only a mute or unmute away. Which doesn't require any stopping of playback or record.

Or you could always just open your default project setup, mute the metronome and then resave the project as a template.
