He's the best. Period. And a true gentleman and goodun. Since Vladimir Horowitz passed one of the only ones left who plays with such massive ability and technique and...most importantly...passion and abandon and FUN. Today is his 57th birthday. Tommy Emmanuel. The one and only.

Tommy stopped into an acoustic guitar workshop I was at in Syracuse, NY a few years ago. He knew the guy running the thing and showed up unannounced. Myself and 2 guys next to me recognized him and the other 25 or so were clueless. He listened for about 10 minutes and then pulled out an acoustic that looked like it had been dragged by a truck, asked if it was okay if he played something for us. Everyone was like "this dude looks like an insurance salesman". He tunes up and plays Classical Gas. They coulda used a mop to clean up the drool from the open mouths. A world class talent and a very funny guy. Go see him if you get the chance. He's a great show.

Just recently spent an enjoyable evening with several friends watching one of his shows on DVD. While my son was introduced to him in high school and also loves him, I'd never seen him play. I agree...he's incredible. Also a great showman and seems like a real gentleman.

That guy is tops,and polishing the guitar finish isn't a prerequisite to good playing....maybe the opposite.
