Black and Blue - Master1

sounds great Dan, kinda symphonic country rock, the integration of organ and guitar is perfect. vocal performance is great. not a lot wrong with this, is there?!

Well done, Dan.  I miss your videos, but this will do.  As mgh said, there's not a lot wrong with this, is there?  As always, your vocal is the centerpiece of a very good song.

    All the best,

    Hi Dan,
Wow, this is fantastic. It sounds really nice. One little nit pick - the kick is a bit peaky at about 150hz and it sticks out a bit. It's not bad on my B speakers but on the Focals it's pretty evident (at least in my room). You might try dropping a few DB on the kick at 150...probably have to do it on the track itself and not the 2-bus to avoid pulling all the meat out of your snare though.

Also, you might be able to compress a bit more...I ran it through the SSL here and had another 3 or 4 db of G.R. going and it "filled in the spaces" nicely. That's purely a personal asthetic choice though...and certainly don't overdo it.

This is a really nice sound though. Just cuz I'm a gearhead, any chance you want to fill us in on recording details? Mic, instruments and such? It sounds like a real drum kit to me but these days it can be real tough to tell...

    Thanks
    Dean

I see nothing wrong with this.  Good song, great vocal, well balanced.  Nice harmony.

I like the guitars.... but then I always do.  I have a thing for guitars

Thanks everyone. So far as production details... Vocal is with a Shure SM58 with a black sock over it (must be cotton.) I hate pop screens. I'm not sure how Jamie processed it. Guitars, Fender Mexican Strat (her name is Negrita) through the "Direct Box" setting on a Johnson J-Station. Then re-amped by Jamie. He played a Tele for the middle of 3 rhythm guitars. I think he played a P-Bass. Hammond B3 organ through, I assume, Leslie rotatory. Drums were programmed by me and Jamie perfected and ran through BFD3. All my tracking was done with SONAR 6PE. If you want more info, I'll ask Jamie. Thanks again for listening.

    Hi Dan,
Wow, you did that vox on a 58? That's super cool. I know other folks do it (including some guy named Bono), but I'll be damned if I can ever get vox to sit right when I use one.

    Nice work,
    Dean

The only other mics I have are an SM57 and a Studio Projects C1 large diaphragm. The C1 is okay on acoustic guitar, but not on my vocal for some reason.
