Cloud backup - anyone using one?

It occurred to me this week that although I have a PC with RAID and two external removable backup drives, if the house burned down I'd still lose everything.  I'll probably start a routine whereby I take one of the external hard drives to my daughter's house and refresh it once a month or something.

But someone was telling me this week about the merits of DropBox and similar services.  Does anyone here use one?
Having looked at one or two they seem to 'run in the background' and keep files up to date as they change - but I always thought that my PC should be totally dedicated when using music software and that a background service like this could interfere with things, e.g. in the middle of mixdown.

I'm sure you could set it up so you can upload backups manually instead of having it running in the background all the time. Never used one of those services though.

Take a small backup-program and after works copy the files daily to this hi-drive.
You can bind it as a virtual harddrive (for example x:\ ) via WebDrive. Works perfect for me.

You know it's weird. I woke up this morning thinking that I should open a Sound Cloud account so I can share my little sonic experiments with you guys. hmm...

I use my web-hosting account which gives me 100GB storage. $95 per year gets me my site AND a cloud to store important stuff in! No other proprietary software or companies to worry about, just plain FTP the stuff up there.... R

I'm still old fashioned.  I refuse to use someone else to store my data.  I use Acronis True Image backup software and make periodic (as needed) full hard drive backups to a separate internal hard drive.  Acronis and the 1.5TB hard drive cost me about $150 total and there is no yearly (or monthly) recurring charge.

If you are mobile and travel to different locations, such as a company rep,  then the cloud based backup is useful as you can recover data from anywhere (provided you can get the PC to work).

    Carbonite

I've used it for years now and yes... it did save my butt a few years back when my work computer crashed it's hard drive..... it refused to boot. Since I run my business from it.... billing and customer records.... to say I was in panic mode was putting it lightly.  And yes, I did disk backups but all the data that was entered since the last backup would be missing.....

I bought a new computer and switched my registration with Carbonite to the new one and let it begin the restore process.

Next morning.....everything was there....company records, pictures, music files.....everything. I had to reinstall the application programs from disk, but all the data files were saved by Carbonite.  I only had to enter one day or two of data to catch up the records..... YEAH! Carbonite ROCKS!

    NOW......

I have it on my work computer and on my daughter's machine for school. Don't want to lose those term and research papers the night before they are due.

Carbonite is now offering mobile apps for smart phones to allow access to your files from the phones and they just came out with a small business backup plan to allow all the computers in small businesses to have unlimited back up for one price. Since I now have several more computers in the family...second daughter in college and wife's work (she's a teacher with lesson plans and such) I might as well switch to that plan and then I can also add my DAW's with their projects into the mix as well.... put all my data into the cloud.

Since I know this works well from past experience, and the fact that the backups are all automatic, I think it is a great deal and the perfect way to do backup.

All the onsite methods are subject to complete loss if a fire or theft occurs.  Seriously.....  Who really makes backup disks on a regular basis and stores them offsite in a secure location? Anyone?

You see, did you ever think about what would happen if your house burned down? ALL the hard disks in the world would be useless. Short of getting a safety deposit box, or leaving physical media somewhere else, the cloud is the ticket, and like I said: my web hosting is $95 per year ANYWAY, might as well use ALL the space they give me, right? I have a hard drive backup in a fire resistant safe.  Its not the latest backup but current enough that I would not lose any "irreplaceable" data.

I guess it depends on the particular situation.

I'm a retired LAN/WAN Network Manager for SSA.  That data is very critical and SSA kept a backup copy of each day's data on site, another copy at an off premiss location and another copy in a remote secure location.  Nothing I have is that critical.  Before working at SSA, I was a programmer at NASA (Goddard Space Flight Center) and the data that my department handled was backed up but nothing like SSA.

I use a 32gig flash drive for each project. Copy the file folder of each clients work to a separate USB flash drive and slip it in my shirt pocket as I leave the studio. Works like a charm.

Someone may explain this better than me / or correct me if I am wrong:
    Be careful with dropbox.
it is NOT a backup service. It is a remote computers syncing service. and there is a big difference.
My understanding of it is that if you delete files from your cim conputer hard drive, they will also be deleted from your dropbox mirror cloud folder.
it is not strictly speaking a backup service. You cannot remove the files from the "dropbox folder" that resides on your computer or after a short while, they would also be dissaperaing from your "online" dropbox folder.

    Cheers,

    Vinny
