Guilty Pleasure .....

I hadn't intended to record this but I was having so much fun with it....

The original of this tune is hardly worth a second glance, but when Neil Sedaka re-released this as a jazzy ballad, I've liked this ever since.

So... for your retro pleasure....

Wow. That's fantastic. I literally rocked back in my chair and clapped when the vox harms kicked in at 0:28.

Really really cool. Thanks for posting it.

Gotta ask, what is your vocal chain here? And how did you mic the guitars?

I just love the tone you get on your guitar Daryl!  great vox, great harmonies!  piano is almost buried at times, other than that, mix is really good.  love that solo!

That is about as smooth as one can get, Daryl.  Lovely version and arrangement.  You are one of the smoothest guitar players and singers around.  A+ on this tune.

Dean - Thank you.  I'm using a MikTek C7 into my EMU 1820M preamp/interface.  I have a touch of PSP Old Timer compression plug-in, and a touch of the Sonitus Reverb.  I have no EQ on this as I've found the C7 fits my voice well as is.  The Carr Mercury amp is mic though my home-made isolation box (same speaker as the Carr amp - Emminece Red, White, and Blues 12") with a Sennheiser e-906 cab mic.  The bass is DI into the EMU with some PSP Old Timer compression.

Robbie - Once again you are wrong, the Campellone is not on this tune, but it should have been.  This was recorded with my overseas guitar.  Thanks.

Frank -  The women liked it, I'm really pleased.  Thank you my friend.

Reese - The piano is burried and the guitar is up front for a reason... I'm a lousy piano player.  So glad you liked it.

Lynn -  Thanks, that's very flattering.  I wish I had wirtten it.

I wasn't sure how this song would go over, it's a bit dated for our younger members, but it is a good song.

I also fretted over the drums because I didn't have a lot in 12/8 loops, so I had to cut and piece a bit.  I figured they would take a lot of heat ,  43 weeks to retirement and the time to explore drum programming.

Ah the PSP Old Timer...I keep forgetting I own that one and then every time I remember I say something like "wow...I need to quit forgetting I own that one" :)

    Nice work on this.

Daryl, I will be honest with you... when I saw this new post, my first though was "I hope he does something a bit different"... and lo... you did.

The harmonies are awesome my man. Awesome. My only crit is I find the lead vocals are too restrained. I kinda would like to hear a bit more power from them. Sing it out!

    Cheers

Dean - The PSP Old Timer is my favorite and most used plug in.  It's quite transparent even when cranked, so it's easy to keep under control, and it's really got a smooth sound.

John - Glad you liked it.  The song seems to apeal to us old guys .  You didn't kill me on the drums.... are you being kind, or are they passable?

Paulo - I like heavy as much as the next guy, but I like smooth more than most guys!  Thank you!

Shad - Thanks for the kind words... but I was belting it out.  I don't have a  "belting out" voice,  no grit either.   God determined that I was to remain smooth in my every effort.  I plug in a Tube Screamer, and I get Gibson L5 tones...it's a curse I live with .

Well, Daryl, I did the backseat boogie to Neil's music and I was going to ask you why you would even try this song.   Nevermind, you did it just right.  I love his music and his vocals.  You just did this the Daryl way and it's beautiful.  I saw him on Huckabee a few weeks ago and he did the updated version.  Yours might be my new favorite version.

    Hi Daryl,

I absolutely loved this! Vocals sounded great. If you would have tried to belt this tune out it would have lost all the intimacy. Harms were great, guitars and everything else was really well done. Good mix and good eq curves too!

The only slight crit I can give you (and this is only because I'm a stickler for this) is the drum sounds seem to be the weakest link in the chain here. Everything else was so big and awesome sounding...and then this little drum kit sort of pops its head through. They fit the song and were done well as far as the programming....I just think a cooler drum sound would have really put this over the top. There are some awesome drum samples out there that have that old 60's or 70's sound that would really help push this a few more notches.

Again though, nothing bad in this and it's not that I hate the drum sounds...just my own little pet peeve being a part time drummer. :) Everything else was golden brother...well done! :) I can remember my mom and I acting this out and singing this to our family....ah memories...thanks for sharing it. :)

Warren -  Thank friend.  I ended up having to do this in the key of "B", which I find is lousy key to play bass in.

Tim - Thanks so much.  Glad you like the harmonies, you can dis the the drums if you like

Danny - Drums are my weakest point because I have no clue how to program drums and I'm stuck with loops.  I also had very few 12/8 loops to work with.  Thanks for nice words!

Edward - Thank you.  Yes, I am the ****ed drum mixer, it's a curse I live with... for now.

Glenn -  Thank you.  Not sure how to take that as I'm doing all the back ground harmonies... maybe I need to deepen my voice.

A GREAT take on this song. Love the guitar solo and the tone. The vox and harmonies sound fantastic.  If you don't mind me asking what was your vocal chain on this piece? KUDOS!

Dave -   Thank you.  They seem to be popular and I didn't put any special work on them.  Glad they work.

Kev -  Here is what I has responded to Dean above.  I'm using a MikTek C7 into my EMU 1820M preamp/interface.  I have a touch of PSP Old Timer compression plug-in, and a touch of the Sonitus Reverb.  I have no EQ on this as I've found the C7 fits my voice well as is.    The C7 was really a good buy for me, I like it a lot.  Not cheap, but not the price of Neuman either.
