Different makes of Audio Interface.. using a common USB ASIO driver..

Came across this site :

http://www.usb-audio.com/links.html

Seems to say all these interfaces will operate a super low latency..

Most ASIO driver interfaces with a reasonably decent computer and interface will give you low to very low latency.

Anything under 10ms...which is actually kind of high by today's standards is very workable.  Lower of course, is better but not to many people will be adversely affected by 10ms.

I don't see anything there which says these use "common USB Audio drivers"

there's nothing "common" between their audio drivers except the USB protocol which is a required standard.

Keep in mind that published "low latency" and realworld (measured) low *round-trip* latency can be two very different things.

ie:  At a 64-sample ASIO buffer size/44.1k, the ASIO output buffer's latency (alone) is 1.5ms.
This is what many audio interface manufacturers publish.
However, this doesn't tell the whole story regarding latency.
Many USB and Firewire units use a large hidden safety buffer (to ensure glitch-free playback even under less than ideal circumstances).  This can literally double the round-trip latency compared to the best performing units.  Point being, not all USB audio interfaces perform equally well when it comes to ultra low round-trip latency.  Choose one of the better units (RME - 4.9ms total round-trip latency at a 48-sample ASIO buffer size/44.1k) and you have a unit that offers round-trip latency on par with the best PCI/e units.  Choose one of the poor performers (Tascam)... and your roundtrip latency can be triple or more (making it unuseable for software-based monitoring).

    Best Regards,

Tascam DID have terrible latency, I had 28 ms with xp 32 bit, but I now get 11 ms with W7 64 bit. It's still a tiny bit to much for me to consider using software real time efxs, but does not interfere with normal recording work.
