What is the secret to the drum pain in piano roll view?

I have some projects where it works fine, that is I double click a midi clip with drum parts and I see in the piano roll on the left a list of the various drum instrument names for each note.

Other times, yes I  can force it by dragging the drum pane down, but it won't persist, I have to do it every time I open the piano roll view of the drum track.

I seek advice from those who have come to understand the mysterious ways.

It would be great if someone could give some good feedback on this.  I can't get the drum instrument names to stick reliably either.  In some projects they are fine and in others I always get piano notes.  Changing to drum notes and then saving the project doesn't seem to work -- piano notes reappear.  I've looked at the settings and I can't see what is different about the ones that come out correct and those that don't.  Mystery.....

You need to assign the MIDI track output to a Drum Map and then it should work.

Thanks, Scott.  I found that assigning to a drum map worked.  But now I'm on an adventure to learn about using and editing drum maps.  Beagle's tutorial at

got me started but more learning is needed.

I wish it were true for me, I am using a drum map. However, even when I change screen sets and go back to a screen set showing the drum track PRV, I have to drag the drum pane down to see it.

If you're mostly using a drum kit that conforms to GM standards, click the track output, select New Drum Map,
put the mouse cursor over any map (don't click) and press the G key. This should take you down to the GM drums, select GM Drums (Complete Kit). Clearly knowing how to customize Drum Maps can be useful but there are maps available for many commercial kits. Are you building custom kits in some VSTi? If not, what are you using for drum sounds?

I'm getting along fine with Drum Maps now.  The following Craig Anderton article helped (even though it is written for Sonar 4):
