Latency versus crackle

Hi folks, This has been a longstanding issue for me that I have worked around but now want to solve. I find a fairly uneven latency when playing from my midi controller -- but when I tighten up the ASIO buffer size to 5ms or less, I get awful crackles, pops and freezes when playing back audio. My hardware specs seem beefy enough -- I just upped my DRAM to see if that would help -- but no luck. There are other settings that I have not seen mentioned -- for example, ASIO bit depth is 24-bit -- would going lower help? Also, there are a slew of settings in the 'Advanced' 'Audio Options - ASIO' panel. Should I enable caching? There is a box that says 'ASIO Reported Latency' and the value 303. No clue what that means. I am probably doing something dumb, so let me know if anything i can do.

My music:
Hummingbird Cinema (vocal tracks, covers and remixes)
Mosaic Manifesto  (remixes and instrumentals)

Have you read through the help file section on optimizing you computer for digital audio?
Have you turned off every other progam you can so the processor can work with SONAR more easily?

The latency is determined by the soundcard, i.e., the Emu 0404. Typically 5.7msec is the best you can achieve and that should be good enough. That's what I get with my Delta44 and its not a problem, although I generally monitor through a mixer so I'm only experiencing the latency when I record using softsynths or use the audio effects like GigRig with my guitar. I find 5.7msec tolerable.

ASIO reported latency = 303 means 303 samples at whatever sampling rate you're using.

google "dpc latency checker" - download, unzip, install and run.  if you have high spikes then there's something causing problems which will also cause you to have to increase your latency buffers on your soundcard to avoid pops and clicks.

Just curious, what sample rate are you using? If it's over 48K/s that will contribute to the problem.
