Just Bought X1 Studio

Just got this in today along with the Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 interface. Definitely looking forward to testing this out, though I may wait to install X1 on my new workstation build in the coming months (depending on how fast I can save up for the system). In the meantime I can use Audition 3 to test the interface to ensure all works as it should.

I'm trying to determine the difference when it comes to electronic recording (not using actual instruments) and of course live recording using instruments. I only have a keyboard which will be the only instrument I will use since I am not a drummer nor a guitarist. My end goal is to eventually compose instrumental music using the keyboard and I am guessing some of the soft synths in Sonar.

I assume this would be possible to compose within Sonar...can't wait to put it to work soon.

The Scarlett series comes with Ableton Live Lite so if your computer can handle it you could play with that as well. I think it's less of a resource hog than X1. Make ABSOLUTELY SURE you get the latest Focusrite drivers from their website (don't use the disc) because apparently the older ones can cause some problems. Just got my 18i6 today. WOO!

it all depends on how many and or/if you want to use soft synth instruments,i use alot of real instruments, guitars, some drums, piano, bass.
i use alot of synths to flavor the sound.
but thats not stoping you from using them soley in your compositions.
what ever you do just stay away from the usb microphones.
(only my opinion by the way)

Abelton is more for live work. It sucks for "standard" DAW work (mine and only mine humblest of opinions).

Sonar should be ok for composition work though purists will say its notation features are not as good as other software But then you can always supplement it with Notion3, Finale, Sibelius or whatever flavour you want

Oh no... don't bring up the notation thing! I can't bear anymore yelling.

I agree with your opinion regarding the mics. USB mics to me really cheapen the experience and they suck. I stick with the true XLR pro mics. USB is good for most things, but not for mics. I plan to look into a condenser mic for vocal work. I'll read more on using soft synths.

I guess it really depends on what tool is best for the job. I have heard of Finale since a good friend of mine uses it for their chorus when they do new songs. I've never used Abelton so not really familiar how it works. May do me good to learn notation software as well.
