I'd first check to make sure you haven't turned into a helicopter. Just kidding... Initial set up instructions are in the tutorials (in the help menu). They are pretty straight forward. Also make sure you have read the manual for your audio interface. Make sure you have all the correct drivers and they are completely up to date. If you're still having problems after all that then the forum would likely need more details to help (computer specs, interface details, etc...). However it sounds to me like you are having some serious dropouts or something. I'm just a beginner myself though so maybe someone else will have more insight. Good luck.

It's also a good idea to list your entire system specs in your signature. This way anything glaringly obvious will stand out and corrective action suggested.

@chuck... heh. I'm most definitely still a beginner. I am however getting to be a very proficient beginner. I've been letting myself stay at this level somewhat to absorb everything I can as far as basics before moving on. Should have my first Sonar experiment done soon then I'll start getting fancier. Stupid meatworld keeps distracting me though. Cheers.

For computer specs list: CPU (brand, model, speed), RAM (how much, what kind), operating system (what version/32 or 64 bits)). That's the necessary stuff but if you can also list Motherboard, Hard Drives (how fast), Power Supply (how many Watts) that would help as well. Then we need to know what audio interface you are using (or if you are using your computer's internal sound card). I'm taking a wild guess here but I think if you went to Edit > Preferences and found the page where you adjust the "Buffer Rate" then increased it to something higher the choppy sound would go away... or at least get better. However if your computer or interface aren't up to X1 System requirements you'll have to do some upgrading of your hardware. There are also optimization techniques that can help make your computer behave better with a DAW. Tell us your specs first. It's hard to tell what's going on with so little info.

Do yourself a favor and get a decent audio sound card. Sound card drivers are very very important. Onboard sound cards are crap!!!! There not recommended for use with professional audio programs. You need an audio sound card that is made for audio recording. You also need a good pc with a good firewire card, if your going to be getting a firewire sound card. USB sound card share just as good. Here are some makers of some good sound cards. Motu, Echo, RME, M-Audio, Focusrite and Cakewalk makes some sound card interfaces also. You also need a dedicated hard drive for audio only. Keep your program drive for programs. Your audio drive need to spin at 7200RMP, at least! Most laptops drives are 5200 or 5400 RPM, so if your using a laptop you must get a dedicated drive for audio only. Same for a pc also. Without any more info, i cant help Read through the manual and do all the tutorials. Its a must for a new user. There is no shortcuts to learning a huge and powerful program such as Sonar CJ

Firewire seems to be reaching the end of it's life cycle. USB is pretty much taking over and works fine. Also if you don't have a really good Firewire Chipset on your computer you can run into problems. USB doesn't need that stuff.

"7200RMP" drives? "Onboard soundcards are crap"? CJ, that's all good general advice but it has no relevance to the question asked. The OP should be able to make a basic recording using his onboard soundcard and MME drivers, right out of the box without reading a manual. It might not be great-sounding, but it ought to work regardless of how fast his disks are spinning. Justin, what you're most likely hearing are garden-variety dropouts, which simply suggests that your computer is not optimized for audio recording. If you're recording on a laptop, be sure to disable your wireless network adapter. If that doesn't do the trick, increase the size of your audio buffers. If you're using WDM/KS or MME drivers, you can do that within SONAR, in the preferences. For ASIO, it's done via the ASIO control panel. Of course I could be wrong about this diagnosis, since "choppy" and "helicopter" are somewhat open to interpretation. If you're using a laptop's built-in microphone, for instance, there is usually an automatic gain control that will pretty much guarantee a crappy recording. But start by turning off the network and increasing the buffers.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

Um, its all relevant. He has driver problems and drivers are written for spoecidif sound cards. On Board cards have Crap drivers. Its all 1000% relevant. Even if you don't think it is. That your opinion. Not fact! Drivers are relevant for his faulty driver question. Especially with all the holes in his question Cj
