Why is X1 putting audio files in 8.5 directory and not X1 global audio directory?
My PC has both Sonar 8.5 and X1 loaded. I have been using X1 for months. Today, I made my first audio recording using X1. The audio files were stored in a subdirectory of my "8.5 compositions" directory. In X1 preferences, the global audio folder is clearly set to another directory (in a different hard drive?), and "use per project audio Io folders" is not checked. This composition may have been created under 8.5 and imported into X1; I don't remember for sure. Why isn't X1 storing the audio data to the global audio folder that is assigned in the X1 preferences? thanks Keith

After reviewing the help files, I learned that I should find a "project audio files" under the files menu, where presumably, I can define the location of the project audio files. However, there is no such selection under the X1d files menu. In any case, as previously stated, "use per project audio folders" is not checked in the preferences.

This composition may have been created under 8.5 and imported into X1; I don't remember for sure. Can't say for sure, but if you started it in 8.5 and opened it in X1, then your save prefs for the project probably wouldn't change. Try saving under a different name and see what happens. (In X1 of course!) Brian

Saving under a different name did not help. The audio files are being stored in an "audio" directory in a composition directory in the 8.5 environment, as if I was using 8.5 with use of project audio files enabled. I have never used this option; I have always stored audio files in a global directory. In x1, under project -> audio files, there is what the documentation refers to as a "project file dialog box." It is not a dialog box; it is an infomortion box, since no fields can be modified. This box indicates that the project files are indeed being stored in an 8.5 directory. However, in the X1 global preferences, I have use of project audio files disabled (unchecked).

Sonar can save anywhere you want. But if you do not use per project folders Sonar will use the default audio folder for all the audio. You change this in Preferences.

Open the preferences and go to File-->Audio data. There you can select and change the global audio folder. X1 install may have picked up your prefs from 8.5. You can also select the "Per project folder" option there as well. Other folder locations and prefs are set in the Prefs-->File--->Folder locations page. HTH

File > audio data specifies the correct global path, which is where I want the x1 audio data to be stored. Whether or not "use per project audio folders" is checked, the audio data is still stored in the old 8.5 project audio directory. Checking or unchecking (and then applying change) this box makes no difference. Project > audio files "dialog" indicates a path to the 8.5 project directory, and no matter what I do (e.g. save & re-open project, check/uncheck "use per project audio folders:), this path will not change.

That sounds like an installation issue and you may be better off contacting support. Very strange.

Everything that I am able to input in the X1 preferences sticks. It is just that the preferences are not "obeyed." Audio is saved to the old 8.5 project directory regardless of any path that I input in preferences, and whether or not "use per project audio folders" is checked. I shall contact Technical Support.

Do a "save as" to save to the new location with projects before you made those preference changes. The changes go into effect with new projects, not old one Thank me, Cj

That's what I'd do as that definitely isn't 'normal'. Just as a matter of interest when you specify the project name while using "per project folders" do you see the correct audio path specified/created in the save as dialogue? The "Project Path" and "Audio Path" fields should update as you navigate your file system. If they are showing the correct save paths but using somewhere else I really have no idea what is happening. Sorry.

In Preferences, go to File> Folder Locations> Project Files field. Whatever is there is where your files sould be getting saved. Is the SONAR 8 directory in that Project Files field?

Thomas. As I understand the OP he has changed that field but at save time the audio is being written elsewhere, that's why I was wondering what the save as box is showing. Either way it's certainly bizarre.

Yes. If he specified in that filed the directory he wants projects to be saved to, and they are not being saved to that directory, that is peculiar, in deed, and contacting Tech Support is a good idea. :) But I have read the entire thread and I have not seen that he said anything about what he placed in that specific field or what is written in that specific field. That's why I inquired. :)

When I posted above, Sonar and the project were set up as follows: edit > preferences > audio data: global audio folder: F:\sonar audio\sonar X1 audio "use per project audio folders" is not checked. project > audio files: project audio folder: d:\music data\sonar 8.5 compositions\<project name>\audio global audio folder: F:\sonar audio\sonar x1 audio Saving the project with "use per project audio folders" checked results in the audio being saved to the project audio folder: d:\music data\sonar 8.5 compositions\<project name>\audio folder. Saving the project with "use per project audio folders" unchecked also results in the audio being saved to the project audio folder: d:\music data\sonar 8.5 compositions\<project name>\audio folder. Based on FastBikerBoys' suggestion, I "saved as" with "use per project audio folders" checked, and the audio was saved to d:\music data\sonar X1 compositions\<project name>\audio folder. This is progress of sorts. The "save as" dialog panel correctly indicated that the audio would be saved to this X1 folder. Next, I unchecked "use per project audio folders" and saved the project again. The audio was not saved to the F:\sonar audio\sonar X1 audio folder.

Since my last update, I have opened another composition, recorded an audio track, and saved the audio track, just to verify that it is indeed possible to save audio data to the global directory. For this project, the audio was saved to the global directory. For some reason, in the project discussed above, I cannot get the audio to be saved to the global directory under any circumstances that I can create.

project > audio files: project audio folder: d:\music data\sonar 8.5 compositions\ \audio global audio folder: F:\sonar audio\sonar x1 audio If by " project audio folder: d:\music data\sonar 8.5 compositions\ \audio global audio" you mean the Field across from Project Files under File> Folder Locations in Preferences, I suspect that is why your audio was being saved in the "subdirectory of your "8.5 compositions" directory." In the field across from Project Files, you should specify where you want the X1 projects to be saved. For example: F:\sonar audio\sonar X1 audio. When you don't have the Per Project Audio Folder turned on, all the audio for those projects is stored in the directory you have set for Global audio folder, but when you save a project, it (the project file) goes to the directory you have set in the field across from Project Files. When you load the project, SONAR just knows to load the correct audio files from the directory you have set in the field across from Global Audio Folder. Set your file locations with an understanding of what's stated above, and see how it goes from there. If things are not going as they should, contact Cakewalk Tech Support? Hope this helps.

Just to clarify.........in case there's some confusion of expectation happening. A project file does not contain any audio. It contains pointers to the various audio files used. The audio has already been written at record time to either the global audio folder or your project folder/audio folder based on your "per project" preference setting. Therefore your project folder save path will determine where audio is saved as well. Based on this... project > audio files: project audio folder: d:\music data\sonar 8.5 compositions\<project name>\audio global audio folder: F:\sonar audio\sonar x1 audio If you save a file with per project checked the audio will be placed in a sub-directory of your "sonar 8.5 compositions\<project name>" folder. Using "Per project" the entry in Preferences-->File--->Folder Locations--->Project Files will decide the default path for project audio as well. HTH

I have never solved the problem regarding why, for projects that I have imported from 8.5 to X1, that I am unable to save audio to the global audio folder; all audio is saved to the project audio folder regardless of what I do. I am working with Technical support to resolve this issue, but so far, I am still in the stage of illustrating the exact steps of what I have been doing. Now, I am experiencing the other side of the coin. I have created a project from scratch in X1. In the new project, under project > audio files, the global audio folder is listed as the per project audio file, and not the project directory! This true whether or not "user per project audio folders" is checked or not! What do I have to do to save audio to the per project audio directory? thanks Keith

Can you do a screen shot with your folder settings in Sonar as well as one of the folders themselves in something like My Computer? I am trying to follow you - but it would be easier to see what you have set and what you are getting! Brian

I am working with Technical support to resolve this issue, but so far, I am still in the stage of illustrating the exact steps of what I have been doing. I had a similar problem, although not exactly the same... you could try what I did. When I was freezing tracks, the audio files were being saved to C:\Cakewalk Projects\Audio Data. I wanted them to be saved with the project in the project folder (on the D: drive). I deleted the project audio folder I didn't want the project to use. Next time I opened the project it threw up an error message saying the folder was missing and asking if I wanted to recreate it. I said no and Sonar gave me the option to browse to a new folder. I chose the correct audio folder (inside the project folder), saved the project and problem solved! It is odd there seems to be no where to change the 'project audio folder' for a given project. This one involved over a hundred tracks so I didn't want to perform a Save-As and copy all the audio to a new folder. HTH

Creating a project in SONAR 8.5 then changing global audio folder in X1 will not cause the project to save audio in any other folder than the one originally used by 8.5 Organizationally using per project audio folders is a safer and more user friendly way of file management. Also makes backup of individual projects much easier

I would find it logical (and safe) that if you once start the project using Per Project Audio Folders (PPAF), that will not change even if you uncheck the PPAF box. The audio of that particular project should, IMO, continue to go to the PPAF, and I assume that's how it happens. Otherwise you can accidentally spread the project audio here and there, to places where the project can not find it anymore. As you can not choose two different storage places for the audio of one project, even a "Save as..." under a new name could not pick the audio from two places even if you check " Copy all audio with the project". At least this is how I've understood it.
