Recorded clip all of a sudden won't play back?

k, So hopefully that image works and it's large enough for you guys. All of a sudden the the "active" track will not playback. I touched nothing, did nothing different, all of a sudden, it won't playback. Everything else (all are recorded vocal tracks) play back just fine. If you need a larger picture, let me know. flickr sucks.
Anyone else have this issue? it has never happened to me before. X1 was set to automatically save as well. So when I noticed the recorded material on track (jmics vox1) did not play back, I closed Sonar and re-opened. Again no playback. Any suggestions? Re-record. Just move the clip to another track/new track?

I can see now that picture sucks and I can't make it bigger. I'll try something else. Now I have tried moving the vocal clip to another free track... Nothing. Still no play back. The clip is not muted in anyway. Just all of a sudden will not play back. WTF!

Did you check the settings of the plugins?
Maybe you accidentally muted the track by doing something there. Does disabling the plugins do anything?

I tried that already - Sorry I should have mentioned that. I disabled the plugins - still no playback. Took them out of the effects rack, still no play back. I even routed the track straight to my Output - with no change, still no playback. Freaking WEIRD! I'll just re-record the vocal. But the vocal was PERFECT! Thus you see why I would post about it hoping i can save it.

My eyes aren't that good at the best of times but the "Offset mode" alarm bell is ringing in my head.

Press "O" (so there's a + sign besides the volume slider) and see where that slider is then. You may have accidentally entered offset mode and reduced the volume to -INF. When you come out of offset the fader will not reflect that, and you end up with silence and extremely confused.

I think we've all been there. I know I have, more than once.

I already tried that too. I've been going through everything and sifting through Sonar X1 Power as well as the net... DAMNIT! I guess I'll just have to re-record the vocal take. Cool thing about Hip Hop - You can do that!  If it may help at all. I had the track and event data locked. And when I unlocked it I lost all audio playback to JUST that one clip.

try: http://www.flickr.com/photos/80100737@N03/7171391365/sizes/k/in/photostream/ to see the photo larger.

So I assume you've also tried toggling the mentioned locking on and off as well and checked the event list...

I too have had this same issue occur for no reason that I can figure out.  I will be playing my project and all of a sudden a track will refuse to play.  The only thing I can suggest is try freezing and unfreezing as that has fixed it for me at least temporarily in the past (I have had to keep doing this in certain situations).

I attribute this to a bug in Sonar as it seems to happen randomly and then go away just as quickly.

    So... PHONIC THANK YOU!

Your idea worked marvelously... until Sonar did the same thing in another project!
So I tried it. Then I tried closing SONAR and re-opening! The freeze/unfreeze... nothing. Just all of a sudden doesn't like to play back recorded material. B/S! I tell you. Sooo... How do I send a bug report to Cakewalk?

Kind of a piss off, I never had this problem before. Only since upgrading to EXPANDED.
See what comes about it I guess. I'll keep trying.

It could be coincidence that this is happening now and not related to Expanded. You could be seeing the hard drive that you have your Audio Data on going bad and losing data.

Check your Audio folder where your tracks are stored and see if it's there but Sonar just isn't finding it. I've had that happen when a project gets corrupted. I had a huge project one time that I had to manually reassemble from the bits and pieces in the Audio folder.

Then again, it could be Expanded that caused it. Sometimes things happen during an install. It totally screwed up my X1 installation to the point where I have to wipe it out and start over from scratch, I just haven't felt like it so it just sits there mostly unused now. It caused the Pro Channel to come up empty (no modules) after I installed Expanded, Softube Sat Knob stopped working, modules in the Pro Channel started turning on by themselves again (and this had been pretty solid with the D patch), and other things. I don't use X1 a whole lot anymore so I can't remember. I'm waiting for the next patch to see if this stuff is worked out.

I don't think it is Expanded as I don't have any of the Sonar expansions.

Well... I figured that this may be the cause of it all.

I recently played back the track after recording some vocals. While in Playback I split a track and nudged it forward. When the NOW TIME marker came to the now nudged section during the playback - no audio. So I stopped, started the play back over. Again everything played fine until it came to the audio I had split and nudged. No play back.

Freezing and then Unfreezing worked 2 out of 5 times this occurred during my experiment if that's what we can call it. Soo... I dunno. I close Sonar, re-open problem is still there. Sometime freezing and unfreezing works. Sometime closing Sonar and re-opening works. I'll send a bug report and see what happens.

Ok, So after looking into it a little more. The "not paying recorded clips during playback" occurs ANYTIME I move ANY clip. That clip then will no longer playback?

    Any help?

That's pretty weird. I'd suggest creating a minimal project that shows the problem, and submit it to CW support. You could copy your current project, then start deleting effects and then tracks until you've whittled it down to a single clip that won't play. I'd offer to look at it myself, but I don't have X1 anymore.

Well, I started a NEW project. The recorded vocal clips have NO effects on them. Raw vocal tracks, didn't even touch prochannel. The second I move a clip it won't playback. Even weirder yet, if I split a clip, then move only a section, only that section of the clip that I moved will not play back.

This even gets more messed up. If I freeze the track only the split and moved portion of the clip will freeze (show no wave form in the clip after it's frozen and the clip changes color to blue). Rest of the clip, that I haven't moved or touched in any way won't freeze.

Messed up? This never happened when I had X1 Studio, or even when I moved up to Producer. As soon as I moved to Expanded and got the modules bundle... Anyone suggest uninstalling and then re-installing?

I will at this point send the new project with nothing but raw audio to Cakewalk. Anyone willing to take a look at this project and see if it's the project files being corrupted or otherwise?

If you've set this up as a new project with just the one audio track, you should be able to a) confirm that there is just a single wav in your audio folder and b) re-import the audio from there.

Do that and have a play with it.

Open the clip properties for one of those clips that won't play and check the start time. Is it maybe wacked out? If so, you could repair it by manually typing in the correct start time.

Also, what are your grid snap settings? Does the problem occur when you have grid snap turned off or on? I'm wondering if it's specific to some grid snap option, like having it accidentally set to a gazillion samples with magnetic strength of "high".

I will give this a shot when I get to my DAW, just at work when I checked this. I was actually just thinking about the snap to grid options.

As for Bristol_Jonesey comment, this wouldn't work as it was a "recorded" vocal clip. The clip itself wouldn't even pop up in the browser tap until I press Save.

Either way I will take a look and try this out when I get home. Thanks again for your help guys, well appreciated. I will post when I check the issue.

I'm not sure this is what Bristol_Jonesey meant but, first try exporting the vocal track. Select only the one track, choose export and unselect all the fx, mut/solo and automation in the Export dialog box. If nothing else this will preserve the good vocal take. If you have an external wave editing program like Auditon or Wavelab another option is to select that vocal take only and go to Tools>(whatever wave editor) and have Sonar load the file into the external wave editor where you can also save the take as a wave file.

Now, in theory, you could start a new project and import only the wave file to see what happens. Not likely to solve all your issues but you won't lose the vocal take and you never know, with less variables to deal with you might figure out if there is a specific problem somewhere else.

Another quick thought - if you open Explorer (or the media browser in Sonar or any wave editor) and go to the directory where the audio files are stored for this project, one of those existing wave files will be the vocal track you wanted to keep. Listen to all of them and copy the one you want to save into another directory while you sort out the other issues.

I will try this when I get home. This is the second project this has occurred in, so I know it's not directly related to the vocal take its self, It's SONAR. But at least following your instructions will give me a place to start. I will attempt to try messing with the snap to grid functions first.

So, are you saying that your "recorded" clip isn't one you've recorded yourself?

My powers of clairvoyance are fading rapidly........

No I recorded it myself. I will be checking with everyone's advice in a couple very short hours.

Right, well like I suggested in post #16, you should be able to identify the actual recorded wav in the audio folder connected to this project and import it into a blank track

I see that the wav is visible in track view which is encouraging since you could theoretically copy and save it somewhere.

The problem I have had is different:  Use Melodyne on a track.  Melodyne plays fine.  Close Melodyne and original wav is gone: just a flat line and no sound.  Different issue.
