From Sonar XP SP3 (32) to Win7 (64)... now "Blue screen" error! HELP!

I might be guilty here of going O.T. so forgive me but my Sonar DAW has always been solid in XP SP3 for years and I have finally upgraded (only OS - Not system) and gone to Windows 7 64bit.  After some testing I have installed everything and all seems well.

Now I can get a "BLUE SCREEN" error.  The PC will shutdown itself.  ARRGHHHH!  Can happen anytime.

I'm researching and the error seems to suggest a memory problem.  I never had a Blue Screen error in all the years with XP SP3 (32bit).  I'm hoping some1 here might have experienced such a thing and can suggest what I can do to resolve it.

You made the move from 32bit to 64bit, so you need to make sure everything is 64bit ready.

blue screen errors are caused by these things. Driver errors or hardware.
So you need to make sure every single driver had 64 bit drivers that actually work and you need to install all of them.
Then you need to make sure every software program you have is 64bit ready and updated as well.

Its a big move going from 32 to 64bit

To see in the BSOD what is causing the BSOD, right-click Computer, select Properties, select Advanced system settings, click the Settings button under Startup and Recovery, then under the Systen Failure section, take the checkmark out of Automatically Restart.

The next time you have a BSOD, near the top and near the bottom, you should see a message saying what caused it. Sometimes it will list a specific file or it may say something general such as "STOP 0x000000D1 or DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_OR_EQUAL."

Tell us what yours say? And/or write down what it says and go look on the Internet for specific things to do to address whatever the error is.

Thanks guys.  I tested win7 on a spare hdd for a week or 2 after and few tweaks i managed to get everything working.  some vst probs but ok now.

So i did a full clean rebuild.  System seems great but for these Blue screen errors.  only happen twice since the upgrade.  I've check the memory with "memchecker" and ran scandisk/chdsk etc.  I cant be sure but the errors only came while the PC was left idle so i have disabled power management options to test for now.

Yes Thomas I've done that.  Will hopefully catch it if it happens again and will post results.  Much thanks for the advice.

nvlddmkm.sys seems related to Nvidia so will check nto it.  I'm quickly going out of my dept here....

It appears it's something related to your graphics card drivers.

Are you using the most recent driver release for your graphics card? Did you update your graphics card driver without uninstalling the previous driver?

You may have to do a complete uninstallation of the graphics card driver, and then reinstall the most recent graphics card driver.

If you had any previous graphics card driver installed and then you installed a newer graphics card driver, the best thing to do is to uninstall the NVidia graphics card driver, use the free utility called Driver Sweeper to clean any residue of old graphics card driver files by running Driver Sweeper in safe mode after uninstalling the graphics card driver, reboot and install the most recent graphics card driver, reboot and see how it goes, now.

If you still get BSOD with the nvlddmkm.sys listed as the cause, you may have to use an older version of the graphics card driver, and keep trying older versions until you find a version that's not problematic.

That tells me the problem is with your Nvidia card or chipset. Try downloading the latest driver for it from the Nvidia site.

Yes the OS initially picks up the Nvidia driver and installs it automatically during the windows install itself.  I did download the latest drivers for my vid card so after reading some posts about it I have first tried to "Roll back the driver" (which is showing now as a 2009 version) and see how that goes.

I'll try the "Driver sweeper" next (if it happens again)

And some more reading just incase but again sincerest thanks for your time yall!

Probably not a good idea since Windows 7 64-bit didn't exist in 2009. Always use the latest drivers.

The original N-driver that comes with Win 7 installtion is not up to date verion, you need to install the latest to get the new one.
Uninstall all drivers + control panels before you update the driver. Also Windows 7 need a modern graphic card so you can't use a basic one that worked with Xp32. You need at least old NVIDIA 8600 GT 512mb  and up to run Windows 7 and AERO. I would recommend 1GB RAM on the graphic card and use 1920 x 1080 /1920 X 1200 resolution to run SONAR or any other DAW. 
 
Note: Don't run any XP32bit tweaks in windows 7. windows 7 is a new system and those old tweaks are obsolete in windows 7 x64.
Don't turn off AERO, is shall be ON always!! I don't know what you have done with your system or if you have altered it but if you have made XP32bit tweaks on Windows 7 that is causing your problems. There are no tweaks on Windows 7 and you don't need any either.

Ok. It's not up for the job, minimum setting card no DX11.  I would buy a new one, its very cheap today.
Check out new NVIDIA card ASUS GT640 2GB RAM. I will buy that myself to my studio! Buy that and you will not have any problems anymore.

You can setup to use 4 screens on one card too.

thanks again every1 for suggestions.  since rolling back the driver to a 2009 version (that win7 installed itself)..  i haven't got any error as of yet.  its been a few days now so i'm growing confident its sorted...


will keep these suggestions in mind just in case.
