XP Service Pack 3 installation problems

Hello,
I've been running Sonar 8/8.5 for years on a Sweetwater Sound Creation Station. The computer came installed with Win XP Service Pack 2.  Sonar 8.5 and this computer have been rock solid in terms of reliability.  I upgraded to Sonar X1 but missed the new requirement of Service Pack 3.  This rack mounted computer is not on the internet, nor has it ever been.

I downloaded the XP SP3 install file (on a different computer) and executed it on the Creation Station. The install seems to complete successively. There no errors that I can see. The problem happens during the post-install reboot. The computer gets locked into a reboot loop. When XP loads, I end up back at the "Windows failed to boot" screen.  I am unable to even boot into safe mode with command prompt. Selecting "safe mode" still drops me back into the failed to boot screen. The only way out of this loop is to escape into Acronis and reinstall back to previous restore point.  There are no errors or warnings.  I even downloaded the SP3 install file twice to rule out file corruption.

Has anyone heard of anything like this?  Am wondering if I need to buy a USB wireless network card and install the SP3 upgrade.  Maybe there are some other updates that SP3 is lacking which is causing the boot crash? Microsoft Update that it might figure that out?  But I'd hate to throw more money at a dead end if the internet install of SP3 still kills the computer.

As it stands now I'm blocked can't install the X1 upgrade!  Thanks for any suggestions/insight/advice!!

If no one has an answer here, you can post this question at answers.microsoft.com .  If it was up to me, I'd turn the firewall on, connect it direct to an internet line, and repeat the sp3 install. If it boots normally, then download all of the subsequent updates. You would have to run Windows update repeatedly until zero important updates are left. You could then disconnect from the net and go back to business as usual.

That sounds like a good idea.  Moving it to a direct line will be a drag, but you're probably right about getting all the updates. Thanks, Peregrine.

Have you contacted the Sweetwater Tech Support.
Even though it appears that you need a few other critical windows updates as well, their might be other issues at play.
For instance:
1.Check your hard drive and OS for system errors. Run chkdsk and defrag.
2.You might also need to update the drivers of motherboard and other hardware components.
3.Who knows, but their might be some "Utility" Sweetwater has on your system.

you can get it to boot ok ? you'll probably find that PC has a network port , NO ? so no need for a usb wireless thing just an RJ45 cable.

could be any number of things, from their validation tool to something they need to install PRE sp3... so I'd connect it up to the net, fire up IE and do do windows updates **AFTER** doing the following.

install
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
and
http://www.filehippo.com/updatechecker/

via pen drive etc..  in CCLEANER run both the "cleaner" tab and the "registry" one.. it'll find stuff probably, rescan till 1 or zero errors..

then install via pen drive.

http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/downloads/

install GP2012 trial off the site, install.. reboot.. connect to the net / update that..

it'll also give you file hippo update checker things, that are very out of date.. and well download / update

then do the IE > tools > windows update.. it'll probably do the update validation tool etc.
should probably work better that way..

you didn't say if you have a proper windows disk or a recovery disk.

Thanks Simpleman. Yes I did a defrag before the install and a chkdisk after the first install failed. I did contact Sweetware but have not heard back yet. Interesting idea about a "utility". Thanks for the suggestion!

I have an Acronis restore point, Fog.  As soon as SP3 is installed, the system becomes stuck in a reboot loop and is unusable. Even "safe mode with command prompt" will not boot. I'll check out the cleaner and update checker links.  Thanks!
