portable sound card
OK...I recently installed SONAR X1 on both my desktop and now my new laptop...same EFX, everything. I'm going to be doing a lot of traveling (i.e. sitting on airplanes, in airports, hotels, etc.) and wanted to possibly make use of the time by doing some rough mixing and editing on my laptop with headphones. My Dell stock sound card doesn't seem to support 24/44.1...lots of popping, etc. with playback. I've looked at a few portable USB sound cards online but am not sure I can use them for my intended purpose. Has anyone ever tried this before or know of a cheapie external card that will work? Thanks in advance.

If you're just looking at mixing / editing, many small, cheaper and USB 2 bus powered interface will fit your requirement. http://www.sweetwater.com/c695--USB_Audio_Interfaces Unless you also wanted to record audio and run soft synt, then the find can be harder as you would want better round trip latency, for real time monitoring as you record / play.

All audio interface, even cheap ones that is designed for DAW application will work... Creative, even it's a hi end PC card (but not designed for DAW).. may not work properly, at least not out of the box without some tweaking. Search the forum for more Creative cards issues first and see if it's good. Some user with Creative cards may have to chime in. A quick search.. http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=2294570&high=creative+card

Thanks in advance. 1. Have you tried using asio4all drivers with your onboard sound card?.. or 2. if it is indeed "rough" mixing then playback at 16/44.1kHz.. with on onboard sound card you wont notice the difference anyway :) After all, if you are looking for portability then you cannot beat adding nothing :), however if you are looking for a higher quality sound reproduction then there are a number of interfaces to choose from.. but if you do purchase, think ahead rather than budget, as once you get a portable system you may end up with recording etc.. so consider a decent item like a Roland Quadcapture, NI Komplete Audio 6, Focusrite 8i6 or similar... Although i now have a KA6 I had used creative cards exclusively in earlier PCs and never had any issues with Sonar from HS6 to Producer 8.5.3 , however if you go with the Creative item, sugggest you do a custom install to prevent all the bloatware..

Agreed and would just add; if your soundcard doesn't support 24 bit it couldn't even play back the 24 bit project (someone please correct me if I'm wrong)
