stawberry fiels forever cover

The cool thing about having a recording studio is you can record fun cover song at 9pm at night all by yourself. Simple version of a classic - Drums, 1 Guitar, 1 Bass, 1 Vocal with a overdub in the chorus, all in mono. Enjoy the song

Ok you have taken on one of the biggest songs ever, kudo's to you.

Ok I like it but the mix is not good, your vocals are too low in the mix.

Also the arangement is ruining what could be an excellent cover.  You need to understand the dynamics of the track, so when you go into the verse pair back the guitar some how.  And when you do the Strawberry Fields forever refrain, also pair that back.

This song is all about dynamics, you have an excellent voice.  Try a less distorted guitar or another instrument, just to break up the heaviness of the track.

On saying that I could imagine Lennon likeing this, because he always wanted the track to have a heavy vibe.

    Peace Ben

Pretty Cool. I usually hate covers.  But I dig this one.  This is kinda like what Ben said, but from another angle.  I thought the vox sounded good kinda set back with the delay or verb you have on em.  But the guits were a touch to loud.  Just my 2 cents..........nice work.

I admire anyone who is unafraid to tackle a Beatle's tune and put an original spin on it.  It's sure to upset some people, but I find it refreshing.  Oh sure, you can spend time balancing the voice and guitar to get a perfect mix, but you had me at "let me take you down".

Thanks everyone for listening as well as for your critique, it's the reason I post stuff on here, you guys are doing this as much as I'm, and have great insight on what's good and what needs work. So it's the next morning and I listen to it again and I agree what your saying about the guitar and the overall dynamics of the song. Mind you all the tracks are straight up the middle due to the fact that Sonar wouldn't let me pan anything. I've had this issue before and I think it's a template glitch. It was already late and I just wanted to post the song and get some feed back. I'm going to go back and do the necessary panning and gain staging to give it a more dynamic feel as well as add some more instrumentation as the song goes along. Build it up verse by verse chorus by chorus, add horns, keys, strings and a psychedelic guitar solo on the outro. I'm thinking about doing a harmony on the last chorus too, well see...stay tuned and thanks again for your comments

Hmmm... the mix is what I would call a disaster. I do not intend that to be mean. With compression there is a fine balance between too much as a matter of taste, and too much as its now creating errors. In this it is not about dynamics, it is about compression pumping. If you do not know what I mean by pumping, then you need to go do some book learning . Once that is solved, you then need to take a hard look at the placement of the various instruments, both within the 3D space, and within their frequency ranges. Everything is jumbled on top of each other.

Mr Fox, thanks for the input. Just looking at the wav file on Sound Cloud you can see that the track was limited to the max. As I stated in my previous post, it was already late and I just wanted to get it out here. So what I did was slap on a loud T-RackS Deluxe master template just so you can hear it if your listing to it on laptop speakers or a cell ph. But yeah, I know it needs work and I know that it's over compressed. Not sure if we have a policy on here that says we're not allowed to put unfinished ideas on the forum. If that's the case then my apologies.

What a mammoth undertaking and tribute (per Ben)!  Because this is a tribute-cover, any serious crit would seem a bit neurotic, IMHO.  I mean a tribute is a tribute is a tribute.  The original is etched in our brains.

I see you opted for 'extra' guitar distortion and heavy comp limiting ... for busy environments.

Thanks for a great tribute and blast of the past.

Here is version 2 - still needs horns, strings, harmony on ch4 and lead guitar at the end, but I think the arrangement parts are starting to come together http://soundcloud.com/mtg...berry-fields-forever-1

the 2nd version is more sonically diverse and engaging.  would be cool to hear live drums on this. overall a good track. anything Beatles is worth covering IMO. nice work.
