If possible try using the Generic surface instead of the ACT it seems to be your best bet. I am trying to get a controller working as well and am so far very disappointed in the way that Sonar behaves. From what i can find it has always had issues they just don't seem to think its important to fix them.

Have a look at this video and see if that helps. There is a difference between MIDI learn and ACT learn, explained in the video. It sounds like you are trying to use MIDI learn which binds the controller to the ACT cells. There should be no need to do that with an A-PRO as that is what a preset is, a preset of MIDI learnt controls. If you are getting no response at all from the A-PRO it sounds like a connection issue rather than an ACT one. HTH

How did you set up your control surface? I have a PCR-500, the A-PRO predecessor and it has two MIDI ports: PCR1 for the keyboard and PCR2 for the control surface.

Hi FBB, thanks for video, really good, had it going after looking at your video, but having restarted x1 act in not responding again, yet if i call up dim pro my a-500 pro still controlls that via ACT.

When you say not responding I'm not sure exactly what you mean, if you can control dim pro there must be some response. Do you mean that ACT is not following whatever synth or plug has focus? If that's the case make sure that the "ACT follows Context" is checked in the ACT properties options tab.

Hi Karl, thanks for takeing the time , the act follow is ticked, I have tried setting up act as act device and non-act device as your video shows, setting up as a act device you end up with a a-pro template, with the mouse the works the functions ok, even the display on the a-pro indcates what is happening ,but none of the controls on the a-pro work!, if I set up as a none act device , I can change r1 names, then ckick and get learn message, again the controls dont oparate !

Very strange - how is it installed as a control surface? There's a surface protocol in the control surface drop down called A-PRO. Are you using that? I have a PCR (the A-Pro forerunner) and that has it's own surface, although based on ACT, I'm guessing the A-PRO one is similar. If you have the A-PRO surface loaded there should be no need to do any MIDI learn, that's all preset. Remember MIDI learn is teaching the ACT/A-PRO properties box which surface control relates to which properties box cell. With ACT enabled the A-PRO surface properties should automatically assign parameters to cells. Then if you don't like the assignment order you use ACT learn to re-assign them. If the A-PRO properties box isn't getting those ACT assignments when you put a plugin in focus or X1's faders etc when X1 is in focus I think it may be worth just uninstalling the control surface from Preferences-->MIDI-->COntrol Surfaces and re-installing it. Sounds like there's some communication issues going on there.

Another thought.... There's a couple of ports that the PCR uses. Probably the same with the A-PRO. One is used for sending note data from the keyboard, the other for control surface data, although that is user configurable from the A-PRO. Check that you have the correct port assigned in Prefs-->MIDI-->control surface.

Ok.. I'm not really sure which port the controller data is transmitted on by default, the manual for my PCR is a little er...vague... I think it's Port 1. The out port doesn't matter and the faders aren't motorised. Just to recap and get a little more info Can you control Dim Pro using the knobs and sliders? If yes, is that Dim Pro stand alone or as a plugin within Sonar? When you open the controller properties from the utilities menu are the cells green or blue? Do they respond at all to any of the A-PROs knobs or sliders? Has it ever been working? Have you changed control maps on the APRO at all? Which control map is it currently set to? Does it have a dynamic key like the PCR? If so have you turned that on? I'm sure it'll turn out to be something simple like a port assignment.......
