Your favorite FX audio plugs?
I got some great advice about getting to know your plugin's well. That just feels like the right thing to do. Considering the hundreds of plugs, there would be many years of trial and error before one settled down to a few reliable favorites. It would help a lot if folks named their top few plugs and I could forget the rest for now and focus on learning those few well, even if I had to buy the odd one. I assume the basic types would be a couple of types of EQ, Compression/limiters, reverbs and delays rather than the more niche coloring agents such as flangers and chorus. I'm guessing it would also depend on the instrument. (Vox vs bass vs keys etc) or if it's on a master or other buss but that would be good to know too. These are not editing "tools" but FX. EG not V-vocal or AudioSnap etc. I really appreciate any hints. Glenn

EQ I still like using the Sonitus, but have started to use the one in the Pro Channel recently. I like the sound of the LP64 but it doesn't get used much due to the buggy GUI I have a couple of Pultec emulations which get used for specific tasks For mastering I like the T-Racks Linear Phase Multiband Compression Again, the Sonitus gets used a lot because of it's ease of use and it gives me just what I need in terms of graphical feedback & sound Pro Channel PC4K S-Type, PC2A T-Type, PC76 U Type all get used regularly I also use a couple of T-Racks singles both on tracks and busses Limiters Concrete Limiter T-Racks Brickwall Limiter (awesome plug) Reverbs Pantheon Perfect Space Epic Verb Delay Sonitus

Ozone 5 by far the most versatile and comprehensive all in one plugin. I have the Advanced version but just plain old Izone 5 is the bees knees.

stage setting - because it helps to know what might influence someone's choices - I started recording in the mid 1970s to 8 tracks, we had four compressors, one parametric equalizer, and a plate reverb. I love the UAD plugins - they remind me a lot of the gear they emulate, and I'm really familiar with much of that gear. Next up, PSP delays are my favorites. They just sound great! I have a couple compressors from Voxengo, and all their freebies. I wish I could afford more of their stuff! I have the Waves Native Gold bundle - their sound design tools are the best I have, and the rest of their stuff is often useful. If I didn't have the background I have I might prefer their compressors and equalizers over the emulations... they are good, just a little more application specific for me. I have all the Kjaerhus stuff, and I'm really going to miss it when I can no longer make them work. Their compressors are second only to the UAD stuff. I only have the Izotope stuff that came with Sound Forge, but I have to say that their multi-band compressor and mastering reverb are just plain musical. I plan to purchase the entire suite when I can. Soundtoys native - these are effects, but they are the deepest effects I know of. It's absolutely amazing what on can do with these! AudioDamage - I used these at a friends studio, there isn't a bad plugin in the bunch - they took me down paths I'd not otherwise have ventured. These are also on my to-buy list. I'd love to winnow my list down a bit, but really, I use them all, though some more frequently than others. Not ready to let go of any of them, but not looking for anything new either, except as noted above.

Some might laugh at this, but Vinyl is one of my favorite plugins. I batch process all of my mp3s of songs made prior to the 90's through it to give the ma taste of the sound I grew up with. On the more subtle settings, it works great as a general "warming" plugin

+1 for ValhallaRoom, Ozone and FabFilter everything. Lately I've been having a lot of fun with Valhalla UberMod, but I haven't used it long enough to justify promoting it to "favorite" status. But it is a very fun plugin. Redopter from D16 Group is my first-call distortion plugin for drums. The free LoudMax is my favorite drum super-squasher. If you can live with 32-bit plugins, and you can find them, the old Kjearhus Classic Compressor and Chorus are two longtime favorites. And don't forget Voxengo SPAN! The most useful freebie ever. While you're grabbing freebies at Voxengo, don't overlook another oldie but goodie, Boogex. I like to use it to dirty up bass guitar parts. Of the SONAR-bundled effects, there are only three that I use on a regular basis: PerfectSpace, Channel Tools and the Sonitus Delay. The latter has some annoying quirks, but I've yet to find a suitable third-party replacement that's as easy to use.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

I'm really liking almost everything Iv'e been trialling by Waves, now theyv'e finally gone 64 bit,and the authorisation is so quick and efficient. I found a lot of X1's Pro Ch. could be made to emulate a LOT,of Waves SSL bundle presets,so I don't need to buy that one. The Eddie Kramer Tapes Tubes and Transistors, was lots of fun,and the Tape machine was really good, and that bundle has dropped to $199 [less through Tony Belmont] Iv'e liked the Tony Maserati bundle,as there is no other way to get those unique sounds, with other plugs, which means it has sucked me in,and now,I'm trying the CLA signature, which like the Maserati,is kind of unique. Obviously, the Mercury bundle would be fantastic, but WOW,that much money for plugins!,you need to be pretty Rich[like some here seem to be!] I think I'll end up with Tape Tubes, and the Group Processor, from the T. Maserati bundlle, and that should be enough...I hope. Regards Bob

a favorite little swiss army knife vst is Korg's MDE-X. I don't even think they sell it anymore. It must have over 50 fx, including reverbs, delays, modulations, panning, vocal, compression... prob not as high quality as higher end, newer vsts, but a great program.

I like ProChannel, so my favorite purchased plug-ins are Melodyne and Guitar Rig. I know you were thinking more reverb, EQ, and compressor but I am OK with what came with X1 Producer. Of course, if you listen to my tracks, you will find much less reverb, compression, and EQ than on most people's.

I did download all the Voxengo stuff and they look great. How do I get all of them to fit into a Voxengo folder like the Sonitus and Cakewalk plugs do? They came into sonar all scattered and none actually say Voxengo. Alternately- can I change the names?

All my Voxengo stuff is in: c:\program files\cakewalk\vstplugins\voxengo You can take a look and find where they are scattered and create a Voxengo folder wherever you put your VSTs and copy them there, just rescan at Sonar startup if your sonar isn't already set for that. ; )

I'll add my voice to Valhalla Room. I don't have a big budget, and stumbled across Valhalla Room by accident. I don't have any high end reverbs, but compared to even the top free verbs like Epic Verb, it is incredibly clean, incredibly versatile, and is the best verb I have used to date. From what I've read too, many put it up there with higher end verbs like Lexicon PCM. I can't verify that, but I do know that I like it, and it's pretty easy on the CPU.
