Sonar 6 VST issues on Windows 7

Just got a brand spanking new computer, but I really don't want to buy a new version of Cakewalk.  I'm really comfortable with this version, and it cost me a lot when I bought it.

I installed it without a hitch.  Everything seems to work fine EXCEPT when I copy my .dll plugins into the C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Vstplugins folder.  I believe that's a default folder for the program to scan when it boots up, right?  Well, it doesn't see my plugins.

So I go to Options > Global > VST Plugins tab, and navigate to this folder.  I click ADD and OK.  But when I go back to this VST plugins tab the folder I've added is not there.  The field is blank again.  It's like Cakewalk refuses to remember the folder I've given it.

Any thoughts?  I'm really upset at the thought of losing all my plugins (and money).

Sonar 6 predates Windows 7 by many years so problems can be anticipated. I am pretty sure Sonar 8.3 or 8.5 was the first version to support Windows 7. I am sure there have been reports of others having problems running older versions of Sonar on Win 7

Is your Windows 7 64 or 32 bit?

So far I don't think anyone has been successful with Sonar 6 and W7. I have Sonar 7 running on W7 64 bit but it is also said to be "untested". I haven't even used it as my old projects seem happy in Sonar 8.5 64 bit. I'm afraid that if you choose to run old software, you have to keep using the OS it was written for for stability. An option is to install XP on a partition and use a dual boot system. Or dig around and see if you can find a copy of 8.5. which is the best version ever. ( sorry, I just can't give a thumbs up to X1. )

Although SONAR 6 does indeed predate Windows 7, and changes were made in SONAR 7 specifically for Windows 7 compatibility, that doesn't mean you can't run SONAR 6 under Windows 7. I have a friend who's running SONAR 5 on Windows 7.

I have a couple theories as to what your problem might be, but rather than speculate you'd do better to contact CW support and ask them how to proceed. I'm sure this question's answer is right there on the support techs' cheat sheet.

Is there a "compatability mode" in Windows 7? There is in Vista. Try finding the Sonar executable file, right click and go to "Properties". There may be a tab that says Compatability and offer different modes (ex. Run this program in compatablity mode for Windows 95 etc.). I have several older music and wave editing programs that lock or crash in Vista if not run in compatability mode.

There should be no need to run it in compatibility mode.

This probably has something to do with the system registry, and either Windows 7 restrictions on HKLM, or registry mapping. The latter recently bit me on my own software, where registry keys created by one program were invisible to another program.

There should be no need to run it in compatibility mode.

"Should" is somewhat irrelevant when it comes to solving computer problems. If all the posters here with problems found solutions by basing there approach only on what "should" work then then there would be little need to post on the forum in respect to asking for help. Maybe a new video card "should" work in a new system but that certainly doesn't guarantee that it "will".  I'm not suggesting my advice will help but I can't see a problem with trying it out either.

My 32 bit version of Wavelab runs fine in 32 bit XP but will not funtion in 32 bit Vista without running in compatability mode. Can you tell me why that "should" be the case?
