It was down for about a day and came back up last night at around 10-11pm EST. I was kind of hoping they were updating the forum software. I was able to log in as soon as it came back up though so I don't know why your login wasn't working.

You could see the forum yesterday? There was even an official notice somewhere else on the site saying it was down.

@ampfixer... ??? Do you never log out or clear your browser cache? If you want to use IE with your new profile just log out and log in with your new handle. I clear my cache daily which deletes the CW forum cookie so I have to log in again. The browser should not be forcing you to use the old log in. If this is what is going on you must still be using the same computer you had in 2003. Now I'm curious because that's freaky, man.

@bobguitkiller... If you look at all the time stamps of the comments there is a gap so no one was able to make comments. Google must have been reading the forum all weird to give you that result. BTW I never replied to your post about the Ernie Ball EVH Music Man guits. I'm curious what you meant about the less expensive models versus the $3000 ones. Anyway my opinion on those guitars is that they are so simple, versatile and play so well that they would replace pretty much most axes I would want to use for live or recording so the inflated price is worth it. However I'd prefer to find a used one for under $2000 if possible. When it comes right down to it I think they are worth $2000 despite what the market seems to think they are worth. That's why I'm curious about those less expensive models you mentioned. Cheers.

The Bassist/ole buddy of mine, who finaly got me to try using a computer, for the first time at age 45,and gave me his 2001 IBM-Pentium 3 XP Pro machine, who thenup graded to a P4 machine, while I went and got a Dell XPS 15 2011 laptop, and then built an OC'ed i7 26k. Iv'e since tried to get him to try something newer, like 64bit,and show him how amazing Daws like SONAR are,but he says its too complicated! It's funny, cause if it wasn't for him, getting me to try computing,I would still be using a portastudio![what he still uses!],but he thinks his P4 machine is just fine for what he wants. Bob

What DAW does he use? And actually my old rig is a P4 and once I get it all cleaned up, updated, backed up, ghosted, etc... I'll be tossing my Echo Layla back into it and locking it down. It is still an awesome recording rig with an old version of Nuendo on it and I'm actually quite interested in revisiting that system with my new found knowledge. For now though I really want to wrap my head around all the modern stuff I bought so I don't feel like such a dinosaur. lol

I then went hog wild, after realising the P3,wasn't going to cut it[though it was a great introduction...especially for free] and he then upgraded to a P4,but WILL NOT,get into using it for a Daw,even after I showed him,Audacity/Reaper,and then SONAR on my laptop. He's totally into the WHO,and thinks ANY music made post 73,is rubbish, and has really strong views, the sort of guy you can't convince, but I'm so grateful he introduced me to modern tech, yet he's happy at 2002. I'm going to try to set him up with some kind of Daw,again sometime soon, but I don't have high hopes,I guess it takes all kinds. Cheers Bob

Sounds like the type of guy that would really appreciate a Mac Mini set up with Garage Band. I've never used GB or Mac but for just straight ahead recording that would probably tickle his fancy and be inexpensive/easy to use. I was really contemplating going that route when the Mini first came out but realized I wanted just a little more as far really digging into production stuff. I probably should have just went for it though as I'd likely have WAY more recordings now.

About the EVH,guitars Beepster,I can't remember if it was Zzounds,or Sweetwater, but yeah, they had L/H[I'm a Lefty] and R/H plain colored-creme,and black models for $1,499,and I got enthusiastic but both of those stores WON'T ship to Australia,Gigasonic in San Hose does, but they don't have those guitars. It could have been a one off special, and it was about 6 months ago,but they were definitely the EVH genuine brand, the Ernie Ball ones, are earlier, and are now, collector items[apparently]but any of those guitars would be great,I think I'll just put a Charvell neck[from a Fender parts store on the East Coast of the US,again I can't remember exactly] on my Floyd Rose/JB humbuckered Ibanez FrankenStrat, which was the ONLY guitar I used, for 25 years! Anyway,I just bought a Gibson Left Handed Les Paul Studio[that I bought BEFORE I saw the EVH's],that I've just discovered does NOT like,to be tuned looser, than A-440,I tune to Eb,one fret looser, and it works great with 25 1/2" scale guitars, but THIS Les Paul, just sounded wrong,so now Iv'e tuned to standard pitch, and it's great.....learn something everyday? @bobguitkiller... Ah, I see. Yeah, buying gear outside of the US can be daunting at the best of times and I've heard Australia is one of the WORST places to have to buy gear in as far as price and availability in the "Western" world. I think the only thing you can do is find someone in the US willing to ship to you (which will cost a fortune anyway) or get someone to physically bring the guitars to you. Even then from the sounds of Australian customs even that could cause problems or incur extra expense. I have to pay premiums on gear as a Canadian to avoid hassles like that and I'm right across the border. It's silly. As far as tuning down the Les Paul the obvious solution would be to use heavier gauge strings (which I think you said you have already tried) and adjust the truss rod and intonation to the new tension. However what would probably be better if you like your higher strings to be a little more flexible is to look at the "Light Top/Heavy Bottom" sets some string manufacturers put out or even more ideally snag TWO sets of strings when you intend to replace them. One thicker gauged and one thinner gauged (the thinner gauge could be Ernie Ball Slinky's for extra give while bending which means you could maybe go for a even higher gauge strings for your unwounds and maybe the D string as well). Once you find a combo that feels right at the desired tuning reset the truss (if necessary) and intonation (this is necessary) and you should be golden. I use just a straight set of .11 D'Addarios and they work well for both standard tuning and dropping down one semi tone in most on most guitars in scenarios but I find Les Pauls are very finicky with stuff like that and it's best to find a tuning and string gauges you want from it and stick to that. Very rigid guitars and yet another reason why I don't really like them ( even though I currently own an LP copy). When they are set up properly though they are great. Personally though I find SG's to be much more versatile and forgiving. Just my opinion though. Cheers.

@Beeptster,I had great luck with Gigasonic,as far as shipping to Australia, they were very accomodating in the declaration, and were even willing to get any guitars that Zzounds had [Zzounds have a lot of Lefty's]for a small fee,and include it with an order from them...very good store that one! As far as the strings go,yeah I've been through all the guages, and am very happy with 9-46 on the FrankIbanez,in Eb,but the Les Paul,no matter how well the intonation was set up,[all diff.guages-12-54/11-52/10-46/9-46]it just would sound consistently off, when using lowered tuning, but A-440,it just rings true, very much so its amazing. It could just be THAT guitar, but I don't think so,it's more to do with Gibsons 24 3/4" scale, being a bit shorter, and less forgiving I reckon,as,like I said,on the Strat type 25 1/2" scale length[especially with a locking Floyd-first genuine one in Australia-cost $450 back in 84!]being a tad longer, just handles the lower tuning better,I don't know how Tony Iommi used to use Cb,but that was an SG,so you are probably on to something there. Cheers Bob

Yeah, man. Sounds like you've tried everything you can on the Les. They are really rigid guitars and indeed want what they want in the end. When they are doing what they were designed to do they kick ass but try to make them do something else... well the results aren't that great. You mentioned Iommi and the drops he did with the SG and that is exactly the tuning I used for years on various SGs. They just bend to the tensions better partly because of the thinner necks. I never used a whammy bar until recently... I just bent the neck instead and with the SGs I could go a tone and a half and do rather delicate vibratos that way. They are a super light guitar so generally you don't get the massive resonance or bottom end you get out of some of the other Gibby's like the LPs, Flying Vs, Explorers or whatever but they play awesome and really lend themselves to far more styles and with the right pickups and amps they'll do almost anything you want. I think it really is a far superior design than the LPs. That said there is only one way to get that LP tone... and that's to play it with an LP. Personally if I had the money to sink into Gibby's I'd get (in ascending order of priority) an SG, ES-335 and a Flying V. Dare to dream. ;-)

mudgel Cakewalk site is hosted on Amazon and they experienced a big outage yesterday. Uh...If it's just that, I'm disappointed. Normally Ff fills in my password and doesn't require the random certification. Now I had to fill in the random code, and I was hoping they had done something to make spammers life a bit more complicated. There were disturbingly many spams all around the forum on a couple of days before the blackout.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.
