Using Two Audio Devices and I Want Sonar to Choose the VS700R
I've been using a VS 700R for a couple of years now. I was given a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 that has an ADAT out. It's a firewire device. I'd like to use the Focusrite as the extra channels for some outboard synths. At 88.2K I get four channels on the VS700. I've plugged into the Saffire and X1 sees those four digital tracks and I can record to them. So that part works. The issue is when I turn both units on and then launch X1, the software unchecks the VS as the audio device- actually doesn't choose a device. I have to go into preferences and change it back to the VS. Not a problem but A) it's a PITA and B) the more severe PITA is all of the inputs on the project I'm working on default to the 1st available on the device! So I have to go and re-assign inputs that were already previously assigned. So my question is this: Is there a way to get X1 to only choose the VS as the audio device?

You cannot use both devices simultaneously. More specifically you cannot use both DRIVERS simultaneously. You have to pick one or the other. If you saved a project using one device as the main in/out it will default to that until you save it with the other device as the main in/out. (EDIT: you can have both installed. You just can't use them both at the same time)

Another thing you may want to look at is Control Panel > Sounds and see what is listed as the default device. When you installed the Focusrite it probably set itself as the default audio device for the system. Just set that to whatever device you want to use.

It's a registry fix. Goto: Start/run and type in regedit. Goto: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ASIO Rename the drivers so your VS is listed first. Just add a letter or number to precede the name. LIke Z(drivername). It won't affect the drivers. If you have to update drivers, you may have to repeat the process.

He shouldn't need to manually mess with the registry for this, should he? I just flopped over from my old interface to a new one yesterday with them both installed and I only had to tweak a couple things to make it all good. Doesn't Windows just do the registry edits for you?

I am pretty sure that if you are using asio drivers, only one of them can be used at a time. If on the other hand you are using wdm drivers, it may be possible to use them both. I believe that one of the earlier posters were correct in stating setting the default device will help you but only if you are using wdm drivers. Good Luck.

Doesn't Windows just do the registry edits for you? It's been the same since I started using Sonar back at 3. I always have to change the name of my PodXT drivers so I don't have to keep switching it back to my other AI.

I'm using the ASIO drivers and I'm aware I can only use the drivers for one device. (I actually have three devices in this PC- an RME Multiface II and the others). The issue is as I described. I'd like Sonar to use the VS on startup. I'm not exactly keen on going into the registry. I guess I could turn on the Focusrite AFTER I launch X1?

At one point I used to use an RME and M-Audio device at the same time using WDM.

Wow. I must need some sleep because I COMPLETELY misread your original question. Sorry about that. That's way beyond my knowledge and I didn't think that was even possible. Now I'm curious as to how this scenario works. By using the ADAT out on the Saffire you can get an extra four channels on TOP of your other device? Man... that could be a super useful trick for my set up. Hope you figure it out.

@bysbox... I thought using the other driver modes was less than ideal at the best of times and impossible at others. Both my Layla and Echo call for ASIO. I'll have to take a look at all this stuff when my brain is working... because it sure isn't right now. Cheers.

Using 2 devices with 2 different drivers is possible using WDM drivers BUT and its a big BUT is that each device will be running on different clocks for determining sample accuracy. If the 2 devices can be joined via clock IO and one set to slave the other to Master then OK or if can be connected via SPDIF then its possible but not advisable. if you're just mucking around the inevitable drift in timing might not bother you. As to which device SONAR sees first is down to Windows. Either edit the registry or leave the 2nd device off untill after Windows then SONAR starts.

If I understand correctly, your audio path is in via the Saphire's jacks & out via the ADAT to the VS700R & then to Sonar. So you're really only using one audio device in Sonar - the VS. No personal experience with the Saphire here but according to the Saphire docs on the web, you need to set that routing up on the Saphire up in standalone mode & save the setup to the hardware. Then you should be able to either unplug the Saphire firewire connection or disable the driver under windows control panel/system/hardware & it should still function as you intended.

Why not plug the focusrite into the ADAT of the VS-700 so you can use both simultaneously? Otherwise, just don't turn on the focusrite unless you need it?
