Another stage collapse!

What's going on with this epidemic of stage collapses this past year?  This time, it was a Radiohead show in Toronto.  One person died.

Thank goodness no celebrities were injured! That fact was established in paragraph #2. Not until paragraph #6 is the fatality identified - as "one man in his 30s". Reuters' headline starts with "Radiohead show cancelled", as if that were the most important fact.

I just watched on TV, horrific tragedy.

Would have certainly been much worse if the show was in progress.

It must be down to whoever designed the structure, rather than an assembly issue as it was a catastrophic failure and not just a small section.

I'll guess there will be a full enquiry into, but I suppose the more elaborate these things get the more prone they become to this kind of thing.

    I blame show-business.

This had me worried last night. I know guys who do stage set up for big shows in TO. Turns out the deceased was a Brit though. Must have been one of the road crew. Here's an updated article... http://www.cbc.ca/news/ca...to-stage-collapse.html

money is the root of all evil

I wonder how many people actually think that's the line from scripture...  Actually, "money" is good, but (the real quote) "love of money is the root of all evil."  In other words, money is like blood, it needs to be circulated to be of use to the economy.  People that hoard it and feel that money itself is what's important are the evil being referred to.

It was a really terrible tragedy and will be investigated very intently. The big difference between this accident and the others is that the weather was ideal. No storms or high winds to bring it down. It looks like the entire stage was tubular steel so it could be assembly error, metal fatigue, bad fasteners etc. Many possible causes. I really feel for the mans family.

This blog following last summer's stage collapse at the Indiana State Fair is worth re-reading. People who rig these stages for a living are incensed about these collapses, emphasizing that they are not unpreventable.

Back in my industrial days, any temporary construction we erected would have to be reviewed and signed of by a professional engineer. SInce somebody was putting their name on the line they tended to ensure things were done right. I don't know how show biz works, but I'd think that repeated build and tear down cycle would increase the wear and tear significantly and increase the potential for problems. Not to mention that fact that it becomes a routine activity that guys are doing in their sleep. It's a bad combination.

Can't blame the industry for it ... Bit! ... you know that ... the industry is not the problem ... the small folks are!

Geeeee, even DH Lawrence wrote stories about that many years ago ... but the industrial commercialism is more important than the substance involved.

There was an article on CNet telling everyone that they are stupid because the only music they love is the compressed music on their iPod's or equivalent. Same thing ...

But a stage collapsing, means that there are no safety standards in many cities ... and they allow Lego's to be thrown together on the stage! It's called an accident waiting to happen!

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!
