Mr. Mustard's Changing My Volume...Or?

Using Sonar 8PE. Working on MIDI tracks with my MO8. Recorded 7 tracks all on the same instrument. All is well. Then, set a loop to record a few more versions of the same track. Before recording I run the loop a few times and play to get my chops right. All is well. But every time I start recording, my audio volume ONLY on the part I'm playing/recording is much lower in the headphones. Any ideas how I achieved this?

Sorry, no idea why that's happening. Sounds like a quirk of the synth. You could get around it by lowering the volume on everything else. I, too, use a MO8 extensively, and often have to turn down the backing tracks while recording so as to get enough volume for the part I'm playing.

Might I suggest an alternate method...I don't ever use the MO8 in multi-timbral mode, simply because its 32-note polyphony is too limiting for more than maybe two voices at a time. So what I do is redirect each completed MIDI track to either another hardware synth (I have a rack-mounted Kurzweil for this) or to a software synthesizer (the TTS-1 is handy for this and light on CPU). Even if I plan to ultimately use a MO8 patch in the song, the alternate synths serve as placeholders during composition and tracking. Later on, when I'm happy with all the MIDI tracks, then I'll commit each of them to audio, one by one, recording via S/PDIF for maximum quality and minimal noise.

How I solved the monitoring volume issue is I use a Mixer. Just hit the Solo buttons for the channels you need, I use the trim on the playback channel to balance. It's real loud! I find the headphone output on most interfaces is just not enough for us old half deaf from rock and roll dogs.,,,,,,

The best part is this eliminates changing levels within Sonar on a mix that was coming together but needed one more track.

Guys, thanks for the help on this. I think at times if I click prior to the loop and hit record that the full volume is there, but if I start at or in the loop range, the volume is lower. BUT, that is not reproducible regularly. I'm considering pasting the tracks to a new song file to see if that "fixes" it. That move has worked for me before in other WTF situations. I'll post if it helps. Bitflipper, I've not been using multi-timbral mode for the same reasons you've articulated. I just record a part I'm happy with then mute the MIDI part and move on. Do you notice a big difference using S/PDIF? Great Cactus, I'd use a mixer if I had one. Perhaps one will be bestowed upon me in the near future! Short of that, I'm mixed up enough. :)

It may just be my specific MO8, but there is faint but noticeable noise and hum on its outputs. It's most apparent in silent sections and lead-ins, so it can be mitigated via slip-edits and split clips. But S/PDIF avoids the noise entirely, eliminating the need for subsequent edits. It also means I can boost a clip, even greatly, without worrying about raising the noise floor, because the noise floor is essentially what was originally recorded in the sample - and as you know those Yamaha guys are damn good. The intrinsic noise levels out of the MO8 are lower than most of my ITB sample libraries.

I wish my Yamaha AN1X had a digital output - I get a LOT of noise, both from the L&R outputs and the headphone output.

Sometimes, I'll also get a rhythmic ticking which only disappears if I  unplug both Midi connections at both ends, power down the AN1X, re-connect & power back up
