The New Oxygen (MRI) [a 'rock opera']

The New Oxygen (a 'rock opera') [demo]

http://soundcloud.com/abe...ew-oxygen-a-rock-opera

basically 3 songs in 1; the intro being a somewhat lachrymose piano solo loosely inspired by Chopin's Prelude in Cminor (transposed to Eminor) and Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata; the middle is more at alternative rock; the bridge & outro echo themes of psychedelia in the spirit of George Martin circa Sgt. Pepper. All guitars are tuned to an Esus2/add9 chord [E,B,E,F#,B,E] Pianos used in recording are vintage antique Cable-Nelsons older than my parents :)

Words & Music by Daren Thomas Turner

-----------------------
the whole thing started when i woke up late one day
a man came on the radio and said these words i say
he said "Son, can you believe the voices in your head?
it's easy
it's easy"

"You are a frequency and not a state of mind"
these are the sentences repeated every time
i drive down and visit all my local pharmacies
it's easy.
it's easy.

i can not think; i can not breathe-- this air is thin!
i even heard it on the News "There Is New Oxygen!
Down Way Beneath The Covers You Can Breathe
it's easy.
it's easy."

i am the only thing that i will ever be;
i am the only one who has to sleep with me.
Therefore, down way beneath the trampl-ing of feet
it's easy.
it's easy.

and then it ended so much faster than before
i didn't realize that the radio was off
"Settle down," i heard them say, "or cry yourself to sleep
we're easy
we're easy"

OK, that was really cool. Love the piano tone. The bass, and it sounds like a low tom (I will have to listen again tomorrow), seem to be trying to override each other when you break into the bridge section and the tone becomes very muddy. It clears up in sections. Otherwise, wild ride man, I enjoyed that.

yeah for Alan's drums i had 5 blue tube pre amps on the 4 tom mics and snare, and an avalon on the kick so maybe the avalon was too warm in comparison/relation to the others.  this was kinda a complicated opus to record in general- the piano intro had a few different versions at first then what i finally did was digitally invert (backward) each note in the arpeggios and attach underneath each note just at audio threshold perception to suggest a 'haunting' effect...using the same inverted/backward arpeggios in the outro which you hear getting louder as the rest of the mix fades etc...

This is one of the more original pieces I've heard.  Conceptually, it's beautiful.  There may be a few places in the mix where the elements were fighting each other, but, otherwise this is on the way to becoming a forum hit.

    All the best,
