Help! SONAR X1 killing sound for rest of my programs.

I have been working on this for 2 days to no avail, so I hope you can help me. I am running a PC with an E-MU 0404 card using patchmix, WIN 7, and Sonar X1 Essentials. If I boot up the PC with patchmix defaults loaded, I get sound from WMP, Itunes, Skype, You tube, everything works fine. However, If I open Sonar X1 and hit playback, it will also work beautifully, BUT then I cannot get sound from ANYTHING else, and need to reset defaults and reboot to restore sound. I have used both the WASAPI and ASIO drivers in SONAR, same effect each way. Also, I have the box "share drivers with other programs" checked. I am scheduled to do a podcast in 4 hours where I need both Skype and Sonar, but will have to cancel if I can't find a solution quickly. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I would assign skype etc to your onboard card *NOT* the emu  (or feed the onboard sound back into the emu)

if you do need to use it for both WDM mode is probably better

less than 2 minutes of google searching would have brought up that guide, there are other guides regarding the 0404 IRC..

This is just a guess and I am no expert but try going into Control Panel > Sounds and set the interface as the default device and disable any other audio devices installed on the system. However because you are using ASIO drivers for Sonar those other programs may not want to work with ASIO so consider one of the other driver modes that those programs WILL work with if that is the case. Hopefully someone smarter than I can come along to clarify. It sounds like those other programs are forcing a default to the onboard sound when they load which kicks the interface offline.

haha , no Willy Jones is.. it's a question that got asked a fair bit, well how to setup patch mix for starters..  I don't own an Emu.. ask me about USB mic's though and you'd get chapter and verse :) http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=1618556

I thought checking "share drivers with other programs" was what you do??? works for me, mind you I only use winamp, wave lab and sometimes WMP on my DAW. beeps and farts are turned off.

cactus, mode has an effect also.. as skype.. well has probably a different bit rate (e.g. 16 bit) , so flipping between such things can cause issues , that and the volume rises. I had that before with my ozone. it'd mess up volume wise changing apps.

Thanks for the quick advice! Unfortunately, I can't assign Skype to the onboard card, as I have been using Beepsters method and the 0404 is the only active soundcard. Nothing is connected to the onboard card. WDM mode doesn't work either. MME seems like it might, but with unfortunate static. Fog, I did actually try to reroute patchmix last night using the quide you found, but couldn't find a solution that worked. And as I mentioned, everything else works fine with patchmix BUT SONAR, so I believe that is the culprit. I will be sure to thank you all on the next BoneBat Show!

Yanno... I don't know how it works and it I'm pretty sure it's considered an absolute last resort but you MAY want to try ASIO4ALL in this instance. Whaddoyouthinkguiz?

    Do NOT use Asio4all.

Use the native Asio drivers or native WDM drivers. Check the Share ..... box in Sonar options and set the bit rate to 16/44.1

WMP can then use that bit rate (for example for a CD) without forcing your device to change it plus you can also work with it within Sonar. S'what I do and it works perfectly.

    Cheers,
    Jerry

I can assure you the problem is not with Sonar. I have used the 0404 a few years ago, and had exactly the same problems. The problem is in the patchmix program. This program takes over all control from the 0404. You have to make sure you are push the slider up on output 1/2 (or whatever you assigned the outputs to), AND pushed the slider up on the "computer" sound output (I cannot recall how it is named, because it is more the two years ago I used the patchmix program). Also make sue the outputs are marked as active. I also seem to remember this will not always work. Patchmix is a nice application in general, but sometimes it is a real nasty PITA.

Thanks again for the advice, all! I was somehow able to record the show last night using the MME drivers, which was the only driver set I could get to work. Now I get sound, but half the time I also get constant flutter or crackle, and have to resort to a complete reboot to get clean audio. Settings are set to 16 bit/44.1, per your suggestion, Joakes. Jclosed: All sliders are pushed up, and the outputs already marked as active. Any thoughts as to what could be causing the crackle? I really hate scheduling long distance interviews and not knowing if I can count on my setup. Grrr...

Try increasing your buffer. I wouldn't imagine you have any need for low latency just recording your radio show.

Beepster: Yeah, I tried that as well, I've got the buffer slider all the way to the right on "safe". I do have the "Buffers in Playback Queue" set at 4, do you know if that should be something different? BTW, I did thank you on the show, credit where due. :)

Heheh. Right on man. As far as the buffers in the queue I don't know. I've never really had to mess with that. Maybe fiddle with it and see what happens. Sadly, to me it is starting to sound like you might have a hardware issue. Someone smarter will have to tell you a proper procedure to pinpoint the problem as I'm not familiar with your devices and I'm still rather new to all this myself. Have you considered getting something with a proper loopback function for this type of work? The smaller Focusrite Scarlett boxes do that and it sounds pretty useful. Cheers.

And I'd take a closer look at what JClosed suggested.
