Cost effective stands for GIK Panels
I received the GIK Acoustics Room 1 package....looks great in the red color. It came with 4 244 bass traps, 3 242's for the side reflections and a cloud, and 1 monster bass trap. I can't hang some of these on the walls because of the nature of the corners, etc. so I wanted stands that would elevate them 24" GIK makes metal stands but they're too pricey for me and they also make boom brackets to mount on a boom stand (which is very cool) @ $12 a pop, but then I need to buy additional boom stands (I've got 2 already that I can use, but extra boom stands aren't cheap either) Any other suggestions? Thanks

Let us know how the boom brackets and boom stands work out as far as stability and real estate. I have 8 of the 244's so far, 2 hung over the mix position (cloud) and 6 mounted on the walls. May be getting more in the future that would need to be free standing and was wondering about the stands. Kind regards, Rick

rtucker: I just received the brackets ($12 per bass trap) and am waiting for the additional boom stands (bought 10 for $90 @ MF) What I like about the booms are that you can adjust the height....the metal stands that are alot more expensive are not adjustable

@ Gaffpro So it looks like you have about $21 in each panel stand that is fully adjustable. Sounds like you got a Great deal!!! Still would be curious on your thoughts about there stability once you have them in place. I really like the GIK room treatment and the entire crew is great. I think I spent about a month with Bryan trying to get the room moved and things placed as perfect as possible. He really knows his stuff and is very patient. I also looked at those metal stands but they were around $60 ea. plus shipping. I think you made a wise decision pursuing the path you took. Kind regards, Rick

To be honest, the boom brackets and boom mic stands are your best bet for a low price outlay. I have 6 x 242 panels and use cheapo Warwick boom mic stands for them and they seem stable enough.

Ok, got the brackets and boom stands.....affixed the brackets to a few 244's and the monster trap. I love the fact that you can adjust the height (I have them set at 24" above the floor) but I don't like the fact that it's a little further from the walls than I would like, taking up more real estate than if they were hung......I'm thinking of moving the studio to a slightly larger room where I know I can hang the front two 244"s, the 2 242's at the sides, and leave the other 2 244's on stands in the back corners along with the monster trap on the stand..will keep y'all posted

Thanks for the update Gaffpro. The 244's weight around 13lbs and I wondered how stable they would be when suspended in the air on the boom stands. When we were testing, using Room EQ wizard, seems like I was getting a little better absorption in the 100-250hz regions with the 244's about 12" away from the wall but it did eat up a lot of my room... Kind regards, Rick

Rick: The 244's were completely stable with the boom stands, but for me putting them out at 12" from the wall is not going to be practical.......they really look great with the stands.....I think I'll just do a combo of hanging where practical and leave the back 3 on stands so I can also use them as a vocal booth Considering the boom stands were $9 apiece, I'll just keep the extra for additional mikes, gigs, etc.
