Perhaps if we knew what you are talking about you might get an answer.

I mean it appears you can plug a usb interface into it and a usb keyboard.
I only mean can Sonar be installed on it and be used for a small project.

So far all the reports say X1 runs on Win 8 just fine. However, its still early.  I expect CW will support Win 8 when it comes out. As to it being a tablet you are asking about I don't think so at this time.

When tables have both the storage and memory needed to run a DAW like X1 than it should run on a win tablet with few issues.

Not sure how much RAM it has, but cpu and storage don't seem to be an issue. SONAR should run on the Pro version, which runs Win8, but not the ARM version which runs the RT version of Win8.

I was looking at the pro version for this. I have not read everything about this, I just thought someone might know more about it.
    Thanks.

Would the surface 8- I5 work well with sonar?

SONAR will most likely run on the i5-based Surface tablets. However, unless Cakewalk has made some serious changes to the touch response in SONAR's code, it will most likely be unusable. The last time that I tried using SONAR on a tablet the controls were so hyper-sensitive that it was pretty much impossible to make any accurate (or even semi-accurate) adjustments of the faders, knobs & sliders. The smallest movements made the controls swing all of the way to one end or another. I do admit that I haven't tested touch response with the latest builds of X1, as I no longer have a tablet-based PC. I would be very pleased to find out that this is no longer the case.

Another issue to consider is that the Surface tablets will have very small 10" screens. I can't imagine trying to do anything meaningful on any DAW on a screen of that size. Instead of trying to fit the entire DAW on the screen, it would be really cool if Cakewalk could figure out a way to layout the transport and just one channel at a time on a tablet and then allow you to easily select which channel you want to work on.

Who said you have to use the touchscreen when using Sonar? It has a USB port so you can plug a mouse into it.

why bother with a surface at all if not for the touchscreen? just get a more powerful laptop for the same bucks... win8 touchscreen uses metro, which is not suitable for pro-audio, no midi, asio, etc... a surface might be cool for client distraction, they certainly look nice :)
