Should I get the Sonar X1 Upgrade?
I'm a happy HS 6.2 XP user. I just got a shiny new Win 7 machine (i5, 8gb) and wish to run my HS environment there. I'm pretty sure it will run OK (in 32 bit compat mode) and will be much faster. Yesterday I received an email upgrade offer from Cake to go from HS to X1 Studio for $59 and I'm wondering if I should install that instead of trying to port my HS system to Win 7. I generally like to stay with current version of software but I'm concerned about GUI differences and compatability with my HS projects and the other components I use. I reviewed the features and nothing particular jumped out at me. (However, I probably don't understand some of the more advanced stuff.) Btw I have a UA25 so I guess I'll need Win 7 drivers which are available from Roland web site. I'd appreciate any comments folks have on differences between HS6 and X1 Studio and which would be best for Win 7 64 bit environment. Thanks -D

My first thought is that X1 Studio for $59 is a no brainer deal. That said, I am a huge fan of SHS6. I know of a few users that are running SHS6 on current machines just fine. You can install both. While SHS6 may be fully functional, X1 Studio will do a better job of taking advantage of your systems capabilities. The X1 interface is definitely different, but I think once you get familiar with it, you will probably like it. Porting your projects forward to X1 should not be a problem. And yes, you will need to update the drivers for your UA25.

Go for it. I upgraded from HSXL7 to Sonar to X1, as well as upgraded my PC to Windows 7 and haven't looked back. Go 64 bit. You can download the new drivers for your UA25 (that's what I'm using). Yes there are differeneces with the GUI (I had Sonar 6 LE before that), but in my opinion, all the changes are for the better once you get beyond the "how do I do what I used to" mindset.

Thanks very much for the feedback guys. I placed the order. The store seemed to have some issues and said to contact support so I sent them an email with my HS serial # so hope that gets sorted out soon. BTW, is Studio a 64 bit product? - D

Thanks. I wonder how they "removed" the 64 bit functionality from Essential? Does anyone like Session Drummer 3? I have SD2 and find it sort of OK (once I find something I like).. -ds

W.R.T. 32 and 64 bit installations mentioned by tomixornot: I'm currently on 32bit XP but might be on a 64bit Win7 in a few months. If I get the upgrade can I install 32bit on XP now and then install 64bit version on a new Win7 PC later? --Larry

I haven't read the license details, but generally one can install either version. Main restriction is to only operate the software on one computer. However, that is just my opinion.

Deep Main restriction is to only operate the software on one computer.
The operative there is one computer at a time. Your license entitles you to have it installed on several of your own computers. Your can download the appropriate version for a given computer at any time.
