Need help getting MIDI controller to connect with Fast Track Pro

Hi all -

I'm able to get midi to play when I install a soft synth (like TTS-1 or S1 Drum Kit), but I can't get my midi controller to sync.  I recently upgraded to X1.

I'm using a KORG K25 as my  controller, plugged into the wall and connected to the back of my Fast Track with a midi cable.

What settings do I need set to make this thing trigger midi events?

You just need to press the keys of your midi controller and if you have a midi track set up correclty with an audio track and soft synth or an inst. track.. Then you can trigger and record MIDI data when you press any of the keys on the midi controller.

Did you define your midi inputs and outputs in Sonar?

No - I tried but didn't know what I was doing.   Right now the only thing I can do with midi is go to, say, staff view, and start drawing in the notes there.  It plays.  But I can't get the midi controller to do anything.

The Korg K25 is a USB MIDI device. You do not have to hook it up directly to the Fastrack Pro VIA MIDI. Unless there is a specific reason you want it hook up to the interface then remove the cables, install the latest USB drivers for your device from Korg's website, and follow the USB installation instructions for the controller (you should be able to download a manual from Korg as well). Once you have done that Sonar should be able to recognize the Korg and you can go from there. Korg controllers tend to be tricky to map but start with installing it properly then come back and I'll try to help more.

Ok - I've installed the software and plugged in the USB.  Still not getting any results in my midi or soft synth channels.

thwart, have you been here   http://www.korg.co.uk/downloads/driver/dl_driver.asp  and  http://www.korg.co.uk/products/software_controllers/kseries/sc_kseries.asp

you installed the midi driver for that thing right? and install it via USB.. you might find a control panel software for it.. specifying you can either select midi ports OR midi via usb..

in sonar look in your midi pref's and see if it's listed even.

the simplest test to check midi is hit a key and a midi icon is in your task bar where the clock is.. if your getting a midi signal it'll light up.

when you assign say a 1 channel VST.. you do have to have audio AND midi enabled (and armed) you have done both ?

you don't really need any other midi interface.. of course if you want to use 1 then you will need the drivers installed for that AND it enabled (ticked) in sonar

In Sonar X1 go to Edit > Preferences... Under MIDI in the menu click Devices. If you have installed the device correctly it should be listed. Click to put a checkmark beside the ins/outs you want to use (I usually just click them all and hope for the best). If you cannot see your device listed in that menu it is not installed correctly.

Thank you Beepster.  It is working.

I've always been confused on soft synth vs. midi.  I mean, if I want to use the Soft Synth sounds, I don't even need a midi track, do I?  I notice the soft synth feeds into the midi channel options.

I'm glad to be of help. I am however a beginner myself so I can't give you too much info on all that but if you want to try mapping it look up the ACT function in Sonar help topics. As I said earlier Korg's are tricky to map and my padKontrol is not ACT ready so I had to map the pads manually. You may find the same issue with your device so either manually map your Korg to match Sonar and it's plugins CC notes or learn to use the more in depth Sonar mapping thingy which I have not yet learned how to do. As far as MIDI tracks and whatever just read the X1 tutorials at least once and all should become clear. Anything beyond this you'll have to ask the smarter dudes around here. Have fun. :-)

well long before soft synths you used a midi device.. e.g. sound module.. and when you hit a key , it'd trigger

you still need to use a keyboard to trigger a soft synth (of course there are exceptions like autorun ones etc)

And really he COULD have used the MIDI connections on the Fastrack and the Korg to make it all happen but as far as I know that is a LOT more messing around with settings. I'm gonna be trying to use my DX-7 as a controller at some point that way. Not looking forward to figuring it out though. Howya doin' tonight, Fog?
