upgrading & downloading?

I've been a Cakewalk user for over 20 years, got my first CW for DOS on a 5 1/4" floppy disk but I haven't upgraded since HS7. Now I noticed everything is downloaded online so I was wondering what kind of experiences people have had good or bad doing 5 & 10 gig downloads. I'm thinking of doing the special UG to X1 studio & then to X1 producer.  It sounds like an awful lot of downloading.

Gary,

When you appreciate what you have,
you have a lot more.

I've had excellent experiences with Cakewalks downloads. But that is kind of irrelevant for you. You need to ask yourself what kind of bandwidth are you subscriping for? Then do the math.

If you are on a dial up modem you won't like the experience. If you have a cable modem with a high bandwidth subscription I suspect you'll find it pretty painless.

Well it totally depends on your internet connection.  Obviously, if you are still using dial up, your probably going to die before the download finishes.

If you have got xFinity, or AT & T or equivalent high speed access.  Then you are going to have no problem whatsoever.

High speed access?  Start the download, go grab a coffee at Dunkin Donuts, or Starbucks...  Make a super-market run for beer, whatever...  Download should be done, by the time you return.

Are you eligible for those upgrades? If not just buy the boxed version. I like having my CDs. :-)

Wish mine was at the moment... download was the easy part. Waiting for Cakewalk.com to decide to issue me serial numbers (9 hours later!!!) and customer support being closed till Monday... makes me wish I'd paid 20 more at Staples for Sonar today instead of ordering it online...

That's unusual - reg codes usually appear in minutes for me.

Have you checked your Cakewalk Account? Are you using the correct Cakewalk Store?

I'm having the very same issue here. The download part went well, and I only usually get around 2meg with my ISP, and that goes up and down depending on the time of day.

The serial number and registration code still has not appeared. I am in the United Kingdom and I am in the correct store. I can see the serials and reg codes for my other products (Sonar 5 SE and Sonar 6 PE). But the boxes for my X1 upgrade serial and reg codes are still blank as I type, and I made my purchase thirteen hours ago.

I was hoping to be able to at least install the software in demo mode, thinking that I would have fifteen days grace to sort this out. But the install required a serial number right at the start.

Okay, it's not life threatening or anything, and I'm sure it will be sorted out, but I was really looking forward to getting stuck in to full blown X1 this weekend.

The only consolation I have, is that I downloaded the X1 trial version, so I can still dabble with that and learn about all the interface changes. And the trial still lets me load all my Native Instruments products. So, that could be an option, if you wish to get started straight away, and it is a relatively small file (under 700mb)

Decent connection and you'll be fine.
I just upgraded to Studio version and the only problem I found was downloading too many of the files at once. It is split into 3 or 4 separate downloads, so download them 1 by 1 rather than clicking them all! It downloaded them ok, but came up with missing files during install.

Biggest problem is I bought studio the day before the "free upgrade to Producer" offer came into play, so instead of getting producer as a freebie, it'll cost me £239 to upgrade. Waiting for Cakewalk to get back to be as to whether they'll give me the upgrade or not! 4 days so far.............

Usually I prefer to have the discs but decided just to go for the download which took hours but we got there.Went to my account and all the serial nos. and reg codes were there apart from one for a prochannel module iirc, just said they were out of serial nos. Installation went fine and I must say I'm loving X1.

I've got fiber optic & its reasonably fast. It measures around 10Mbps on most bandwidth tests for downloading.
I've just never downloaded anything this big before & have no idea about the possible problems with errors & timeouts. The most I've ever done is around a gig & it took about 20 to 30 minutes if I remember.
On a side note I moved over to Linux a few years ago trying to get away from Windows but never have been able to get my DAW working like I could with CW so I've decided to come back & be ruled by Windows again. I'm still using XP so I'm wondering what would be my best bet as far as OS would be. If I could have run CW in Linux I would have never stopped using it & kept up with all the upgrades.

Its only a problem if you have a dial-up connection. Do those exist anymore?

If you have a slow connection, like DSL, then you might want to get a download manager to help.

I've had the same problem of serial numbers not appearing anywhere. I then got the serials by e-mail after filling in the support form on Cakewalk's site, but they seem to take a couple business days to reply (I'm not in the US so phonecalls are more or less out of question).

I've now purchased one of the recent promotion items (about five hours ago) and am not seeing any serial numbers anywhere. Seems like I might have to wait almost a week to actually use it. It's mildly annoying.
