MIDIs Issues

Hi to all. I recently switched to Cakewalk Sonar X1 Producer from Cubase 5. I immediately found it very lighter in resources consuming than this last one, I also solved a problem about 100% CPU overload.

Now, I realized I have 2 issues with my Sonar, maybe because I'm totally a newbie in this DAW.

1) I tried to export a MIDI file from Cubase 5 and then import it into a Sonar project, but I found a total change of the notes pattern. The VST I use is Superior Drummer, and in fact, I hear a Snare instead of a Kick, an Hit Hat instead of a Cymbal, and so on.. I wonder why it does so. Maybe I have to put some settings when I export?

2) When I import a MIDI file, Sonar obviously creates a MIDI track. Well, but the problem is that I can't add any VST in this MIDI track.. I have to create a new track from the menu Insert --> Virtual Synth and then move the MIDI file, from the MIDI track to this new VS track.

I hope I explained clearly the situation. Sorry for my english and thanks for the attention.

    1) Perhaps the drum kit you used in Cubase didn't follow General MIDI standards. In that case, you can setup a drum map (or one may already exist in Sonar). The drum map will map the MIDI notes to the appropriate drum sounds.

    2) To use softsynths, you need a MIDI track and a softsynth track. Just Insert-Softsynth and then set the output of the MIDI track you imported to the softsynth. Sonar also has something called a simple instrument track which is a combination MIDI and softsynth track, but people seem to have problems with them and they are somewhat limited so I don't recommend using them.

Nothing wrong with your English at all.

    2) You don't have to move the MIDI track simply use its output to input to the synth. Use the synth rack in the browser to add a synth.

    1) You could use the same kit in X1 as you did in Cubase. If that is off by a note or two adjust the key widget the amount needed or use a drum map.

And do not forget you can combine a MIDI track and synth track to a simple instrument track. I prefer those, because they decrease the number of tracks and so giving a better oversight. I like to keep things simple. When you have to do something not available in the simple instrument track (does not happens often, but it does happen), you can simply split the simple instrument track (in my case temporarily) in a MIDI and synth track.

Thanks to all, you have been very kind. Now it is a late hour in my country, so I will try your solutions tomorrow and I will report my results. :)
