Can't Uninstall Certain Folders, Which Won't Let Me Reinstall

I've been using Sonar 4 PE since it was released (I know, I know, but I have had zero reason to upgrade and have just been happily using it).
I'm changing my secondary hard drive (I'm leaving my C Drive, with Windows xp in there, but replacing the second drive, with a much bigger one, that has Sonar and the audio files).
However, I cannot uninstall the following folders:
F:\Program Files\Sonar 4\Shared Plugins
F:\Program Files\Sonar 4\Shared MIDI Plugins
F:\Program Files\Sonar 4\Shared DXi
F:\Program Files?Sonar 4\Shared Utilities

And it will not let me make a new install onto the new drive, because it keeps saying that these folders already exist... on the F drive... even when I've removed that drive. The new drive is the G drive. There is no more F drive... but it continues to say that these folders are there and refuses to install them anew. I've reconnected the F Drive and attempted to uninstall those folders, deletes those folders, reinstall everything again... but none of these steps have worked.

I think that I am officially stumped.
Any help, at this point, is much appreciated!!

your in the wrong forum.this is the sonar x1 forum.
you might have better luck in the sonar forum.
unless im mistaken and your using x1.

but your best bet may be to copy these folders on to an external hd and paste them back on to your new one..with the exception sonar will be looking for these files in your old drive letter so be sure to change your new hd to your old hard drives drive letter.
    do this in computer managment.

    my personal opinion..
    your asking for trouble.
uninstall everything and install it on your main drive ( C /  )
sonar and all its files on C and samples, projects, exc on F drive.

Hrm, I see another forum that is for X1... this one just says "Sonar Producer and Studio: Discussion focused on the use of SONAR Producer and Studio editions".

Thanks for the advice. Renaming the new drive is a good idea. I will try that.
And, I had wondered about doing just that. Run Sonar on the C drive and leave the secondary drive for just the audio and projects... But, I am curious, why do you suggest that over including Sonar on the secondary drive as well?

i suggest you keep sonar on the c drive..your primary drive..the one with windows.

    this is the gig bro.

you put all of sonars folders and files on your main C drive along with windows.
    (thats vsts,custom templetes,presets..everything.)

the only thing you should be putting on your second drive is projects,audio/midi samples ...stuff like that.
you want your hard drive to find these folders asap, sometimes when they are on other drives it takes a second..this is digital audio recording..we dont have seconds..we only have miliseconds.

it just makes a mess out of the install as well when everything is spread on to 2 different drives.
as you can see first hand right now.

if you had sonar installed on your main C drive...you wouldnt even be on the forum right now..
youd be making music..and not having this happen.

    good luck

Did you properly uninstall Sonar before removing the F-drive?  If not, then the Windows registry will still contain references to the deleted folders as well as lots of other stuff relating to the previous Sonar installation.  This will prevent a new installation.

By the way, this is the correct forum.

If all your doing is adding a new data drive then there should not be a problem. Data drives are for data and storage, C drive is for software. Don't mess with it unless you are a full on computer geek. At this point you might need to re-install Sonar and start fresh.

Re:Can't Uninstall Certain Folders, Which Won't Let Me Reinstall 2012/06/25 11:21:03 (permalink)
Sounds like a reinstall is in order:

    1) Completely un-install SONAR from your computer. This is normally done from Start | Programs | Cakewalk. This will not remove any of your project files or audio data.

    2) Next you will want to open the Run Command

    a) In Windows XP this can be done by going to Start | Run
     b) In Windows Vista and 7 this can be done by holding down the ‘windows’ key and pressing ‘r’

    3) At the prompt type regedit and click OK.

***Backup your Registry before making edits - you do this by clicking the File menu, Export Registry File.

    4) Now delete the following Registry keys:
     HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR Producer\X1
     HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR Producer\X1

*Please note that this will remove any effects presets and key bindings you may have made in Cakewalk. You can back these up separately if you like, using Options|Key Bindings, Tools|SONAR Plug-in Manager, and Options|Colors. Hit F1 in these views for detailed instructions on how to do this.

    5) Open the 'Run' command again.

    6) Copy and paste the following into the prompt:   %appdata%\Cakewalk

    7) This will open your Cakewalk Application Data folder, right-click on the SONAR folder and choose rename.

    8) Rename this folder SONAR X1 Backup.

    9) Open the 'Run' command again and type msconfig Click OK and then click on the Startup tab at the upper right of the window that opens.

    10) Uncheck all items listed, click OK, then restart your computer. You can always recheck those items again at a later time.

    11) Then reinstall SONAR. Make sure to have any virus scanners disabled on installation. It is not required or recommended to turn off any windows services.

    1) Completely un-install SONAR from your computer. This is normally done from Start | Programs | Cakewalk. This will not remove any of your project files or audio data.
Before you uninstall, it may be necessary to reinstate (from the Recycle Bin) all the Sonar folders that you deleted from the F-drive.

You need to rethink this. You don't want Sonar installed on any drive except the C: drive. You can put your projects and samples wherever you want, but the program and those shared folders need to be on c:.

What do you mean by "uninstall the folders"? You can't selectively uninstall folders. I you need to delete them, you may have to reboot in safe mode. Right now I'd say you've made a mess. What I would suggest is:
Uninstall Sonar from Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs.
Disconnect both the F: and G: drives.
Install Sonar onto the C: drive in the default folders.
Once that's working, then reattach F: and G: and delete the old shared folders.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure this thread was never moved. I triple checked to find the most appropriate forum before posting and then checked as soon as the first reply came. Unless I goofed and a moderator moved the thread within minutes of me posting the thread, some time past midnight on the west coast (which, I imagine, is all possible) I am pretty sure that Chuck simply made a mistake. No big deal!

Thank you all for the replies and the help. It's much appreciated!
I'm not quite the computer newb that my post and my situation can easily have made it appear. It was a long day and night of struggling with this and my wording of things certainly contained some errors, hehe.
The problem was indeed that I had removed the F drive before uninstalling.
Also, I now completely see the major error in putting Cakewalk on the secondary drive. Whether or not it causes any difference in speed (I never had a problem with latency or access times for all of the time I've been using it that way, but I certainly understand how it could affect those), just the simple matter of replacing that drive and windows doing what it does with installed programs and the C drive... makes it an obvious mistake, if I had been thinking ahead at all.
I put this machine together a few years ago and have just been using it as my studio machine for all this time without much problems at all. That's when I'm at my worst though, because I'd become so complacent with it and then -WHAM- a problem struck and I wasn't prepared for it.
    Anyway! :)
The good news so far is that changing the new drive to be the F drive certainly fixed the installation errors and problems I was having. I did this right away the other night, before others posted with their helpful suggestions.
I will be uninstalling it and installing it onto the C drive. Hopefully all will go well. I have everything backed up, but I'll have to look and see where a few options and settings and keybinds are saved and see if I can just swap those over after the install. That should be my only issue, but one easily solved, I'm sure.
Unfortunately, I may still be coming back, in another thread, to try and figure out another problem that developed somewhat recently (I was hoping it was due to the previous drive getting full... and it still might be the cause and I just need to defrag/fix some of the project's audio files and folders. We shall see!).
    Thanks again, everyone!
