They don't care whether we recorded a $20,000 guitar made out of fairy wings and unicorn manes or if we triggered flugelhorn samples from a $49 keyboard and ran it through a freeware amp sim.

Well. I for one can't get that guitar to record properly at all.  Do you have a good flugelhorn sample you can send me?

Replace the word "guitar" with "my voice" and I'll add +1

Daaaaamn...  Danny can pull off a guitar solo in only 700 tries?  I seriously need to improve...

I bet it's to make certain all of those squealies are done just so.

()

LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!! That's EXACTLY what it is Craig! I hear this thing in my head...and well, no one else hears what I hear when I do something over and over and over. To them the 700th take sounds like the 1st. LOL! It's overly anal on my part and a complete waste of time. But I do the 700 takes so fast....it's funny actually. I don't even give myself much pre-roll. ctrl Z do it again, ctrl Z do it again....like in 10 seconds I can probably punch in 4 times. LOL! Actually, the 700 thing is rare and it's usually a combination of takes where I add it up to that number.

Uggh....see what I mean? https://dl.dropbox.com/u/4909348/Yikes_I_Suck.JPG

That's less than 30 seconds worth of playing in a little instrumental that's 1 minute 40 secs. There are 4 other sections you can't see...two pieces with 10 takes, one with 13 takes and the last part 81 takes. I'm not proud of this, that's for sure...but it doesn't take as long as you might think. Most times I'm writing on the fly, so it's experimental. When I write the part first and THEN play it, punches are minimal to just about none.

Bapu: I'd call that cheating like a professional. LOL! Sike, I'm kidding. :)

Bubba: Well said brother!

Do you really retry each take separately???  I just loop a section a bit larger (mostly in front) of the area I'll be loop recording, then set it to record each take to a new track.   That way I can get into the zone (at least the best I can for me) and, afterwards, I've got a bunch of takes to "borrow" from if necessary.  Sometimes I accidentally do something cool in one take that's mostly trash so it can be fun to blend that in - even if it doesn't become part of the actual solo.

For me, I can't handle the getting ready, annoying the neighbors playing, stoping, taking my hands away from the guitar to use the mouse or keyboard and retrying.  Just playing, preparing and playing is the best way for me (plus I get all those takes to choose from).

Yeah actually I do. I used to do the comp thing and allow the bunch of takes thing...but I do this other way so fast, I just stick with it. Whatever works, right? :) Yeah I know..I use Sonar like a Caveman. Hahaha!

If I know the take isn't worth keeping, I'll just undo and have another go.

I wasn't referring to if you're going to keep a track or not, but how to loop record to get the track(s) you want to keep.  I find that if I stop after each attempt, undo and try again that it takes forever.  However, if I have it just loop for me then I can keep my hands on the guitar and get into it much better.  Then I go back and delete the tracks I don't want (usually all but the one that came out best).

I haven't figured out how to use Loop Record *correctly*.  I can set loop points and record multiple takes, but the "art" of loop record eludes me. I find I need to start the loop point before where I actually want to record or else I get the end of one take bleeding into the start of the next one.

I dunno, maybe that's "right" and how it's intended to be used, but I'm starting to think Danny's onto something there.

I love to use loop recording, but X1 seems to have problems with it.  at least on my machine.

Hmmmm. I've loop recorded bass, guitar (with amplitube 3) and vocals. As expected I usually have to disable (or freeze) all plugs if I expect to record at 64 samples buffer size.

I remember Maurice saying that he could not loop record with Amplitube 3 back in the SONAR 7/8 days. Either I don't do enough loops for it too crash (I've done up to 10 takes) or the I7/W7 masks the problem or Amplitube 3 has actually solved the original problem.

I think that's just good advice anyway - if you're not editing a track, only good can come from freezing it.  That's true for audio tracks with plugins and it's also true for soft synth tracks.  I try to freeze everything as I finish recording on that track. Unless I'm working in Pro Tools because it doesn't have %$#^%$ faster-than-real-time bounce, and "printing" to a track takes forever to set up in the first place.  That's why I record everything in Sonah.

What I do is make the outside loop larger than the area I'm recording.  Usually giving a couple of measures before the recording starts and not much after.  I'm only using Sonar Producer 4 on an aging dual-CPU server box (1.4 Ghz) and I don't have any issues but, since I'm only recording guitar, I won't have any plug-ins running yet anyway.

BTW - One trick I've used is to record in stereo with one channel being my guitar as it sounds with effects (i.e., wet) and the other channel without (i.e. dry).  That way I can reamp if I wish (I separate the stereo track into two mono tracks).

Cheating is in the eyes of the beholder.

Does the violinist say the guitarist cheats because of using frets?

Does the harpist say the pianist cheats because of all the mechanics between their fingers and the strings?

Just now I’m remembering a conversation with blues purist who didn’t like guitar tremolos because “If you can’t do it with your fingers it’s cheating.”  Today I crank up some Jeff Beck and am amazed by how much he expanded the range of guitar by creative use of tremolo…. some may call that cheating, but it’s genius.
