Sonar crashing in 24bit record mode
I was unintentionally recording in 16 bit mode for quite some time, when I realized I needed to change settings in the audio data "record bit depth" to 24.I have 'render bit depth' at 32. Sample rate is set at 48 (although it still crashes at 44.1) However since the change,Sonar X1 is crashing every 5-20 mins. Everything was pretty stable when i was recording at 16 bits. My pc isn't the most powerful, and I only have 4 gigs of ram,but this is happening with just one or two soft synths in a project. Any ideas? I'm using a VS-100 as my audio interface.(All drivers are up to date) Specs: Windows 7 64bit Intel Core i5-2500k CPU@3.3Ghz Cheers.

What do you mean by crashing? Are you getting a blue screens? Are you getting drop outs? I'm guessing your getting drop outs and all you need to do is use the right driver mode (ASIO or WDM) and adjust the ASIO buffers or WDM slider. That's my guess.. FYI: Sonar can handle different bit depths in a project. You can have 16 and 24bit files in a project without any problems Sonar cannot handle different sample rate sin a project as one will play back at a different speed. Sample rates need to be the same as it was originally recorded at. Dont change it Cj

Well yes, drop outs.An operation will hang mid process, and I'll get a message 'Sonar has stopped working'. I'm in ASIO mode and I've adjusted the buffers. I have to keep my sample rate the same anyway, because sample rate is also set within the VS-100, and a project can't be played if the setting within Sonar doesn't match it. I changed sample rate on different versions of the same song to see if this had any effect on the drop out issue.

Like i said, just adjust your ASIO Buffers or WDM slider until it stops. Your sample rate has nothing to do with it.

I've tried adjusting the ASIO Buffers man, but it's still bugging out on me. I'll be playing a section of the project when suddenly the thing crashes out on me, ie: it will suddenly 'stick' and loop ad infinitum - like a stuck record- (until I close Sonar, switch off my VS-100, and re-boot my whole damn pc (because I can't reopen Sonar without restarting my computer). It's driving me nuts. It's happening every frigging 10 mins or so.It's only started happening this frequently since I switched to 24 bit recording mode.I'm figuring I'm gonna have to switch back to 16 bit.

Try a different driver update for your VS 100. Sometimes the newest ones are not the best one. Make sure your onboard sound card is not set up in sonar. Maybe it got set up without you knowing. Weid things happen. There is also a dropout setting in your aud.ini file. I think its "dropoutmsecs" or soemthing. Raise it and try again CJ

This may seem obvious, but you have optimized your PC for recording? Have you tested your system latency with DPCLAT ?

Yea, there is something going on in the pc's background if you cant record in 24bit. I could record in 24 bit with a single core pentium 1 from 1990's Cj

Is it possible that the project is corrupt? Will other files work?

Thanks for all your input.I think I've now resolved the problem. I've disabled my network adapter and now everything seems to be stable..........

There really is a huge advantage to optimizing your PC for recording. Disabling Third party programs running at startup among other things is key. There are a few good threads on this subject ; )
