installing plugins -what is "shared plugs" doing?

1. Why are there the two folders for plugins?
"VST Plugins" and
"Shared plugins"

AFAIK the Shared Plugins folder holds the DirectX effects rather than the VSTs

I believe that is correct.  There's even a "shared DXi" folder for instruments.

Why there's a "shared" in the name of these folders, however...  I have no idea.

Because those plugins are available from various versions of Cakewalk software it has become the conventional default location for the Dx plugins.

Otherwise you'd have duplicate folders with the same plugs in them across multiple Sonar versions

    CbB, Platinum, 64 bit throughout
    Custom built i7 3930, 32Gb RAM, 2 x 1Tb Internal HDD, 1 x 1TB system SSD (Win 7), 1 x 500Gb system SSD (Win 10), 2 x 1Tb External HDD's, Dual boot Win 7 & Win 10 64 Bit, Saffire Pro 26, ISA One, Adam P11A,
