Full system reinstall query

Hi again...

Sorry to be a pain, but I have a bit of a quandary here. I could just carry on as I am, as my current install works okay, generally, although I do suffer the odd strange issue here and there. But the issue for me now, is that since I got my new laptop a couple of weeks ago I have installed quite a bit of stuff, in an effort to decided which direction I needed to take with respect to turning my lappy into a DAW.

My last version of Sonar was 6. So I first tried to get that running on my system. I was having trouble getting it running to be honest, but I won't go into detail with respect to that. I then decided to try X1 PE and downloaded the trial. Needless to say, I was smitten with the new layout so I then decided to go ahead with the upgrade. The only problem there was I had problems logging into the Cakewalk store and I ended up taking a trip into Liverpool to see if the local Roland store could help me out with that.

While I was in that store, I also wanted to discuss external sound cards, and the gentleman was very helpful and I ended up walking out with a QUAD-CAPTURE. That particular device came bundled with X1 LE, so I duly installed that too, thinking that it may be enough for my needs. But it wasn't, really, even though the stuff I produce is mainly old school electronic music. But I think that even for me, the features were just a little bit lacking.

In the meantime I sussed out why I was having problems getting into the Cakewalk store. So I then upgraded to X1 PE and, after downloading all the files, I installed that.

I then upgraded to full Dimension Pro and got Guitar Rig 5 too.

Okay, I think you get the idea, and I need to get to the point. I have now installed so much stuff that when I go to select soft synths or effects the list presented is enormous, and I could do with making it much simpler. I don't think I need Guitar Rig 4 for instance, or to be able to load Dim Pro LE, or the LE version of Rapture.

So, I am thinking of wiping my system and starting again. Sounds like a bit of a pain because I would need to start right at the beginning with Windows 7.

The only thing that worries me though, before I embark on this task, is the issue of serials and reg codes. Will I need to apply for new registration codes for my new Windows install? Or does Cakewalk system somehow know that I am re-installing Sonar onto the same laptop?

Bit of a noob question I suppose, and I need to nip over to the Native Instruments website and ask the same question there for Absynth, Battery and Guitar Rig.

Perhaps I should look at other ways of just uninstalling the other bits and pieces. The only thing that worries me about uninstalling software is that some times shared files can be lost.

A bit of a mess huh. I hope I get some feedback, and that peeps haven't switched off before they get to this bit lol

cheers

If you go into plugin manager, you'll find there a section which allows you to exclude whatever plugs you want from being scanned in the first place.

I'd do that rather than reinstall everything.

Then, again in plugin manager, you can create your own plugin layouts which makes navigating through them a lot easier than just scrolling through one long generic list

Yeah, I think that you're bang on with that advise Colin. I think I might have ago at uninstalling some of the LE products, and also Sonar 6 PE, but before doing so I will back up the shared folders, and even the program file folders, just in case I need to put something back...

But I do also need to learn more about the plug-in manager. I'm learning so much stuff at the moment, even though I'm not exactly a new user... I tend to learn enough to get me going, and then don't bother going back to learn about the finer points...

    cheers :)

I'd leave 6 PE on your machine. It doesn't take up any room at all, will not interfere any way with X1, and removing it might cause old projects to behave a little abnormally.

    I had 6, 7, 8, 8.5 AND X1 on my old rig
