Newbie here! Hello all.
Hi all. I'm trying to go from recording on a Tascam DP08 using a DR-670 and keyboard to using Sonar 7 XL. I can see I got a huge learning curve ahead of me. I'm glad the forum is here cause I can see I'm going to need some help getting up and going. I do have Garrigus's Sonar 7 and Sonar 8 books. It helps but I'm so imbedded in old school (not that that's a bad way to go - I'm just trying to go a different direction that looks like it should be easier in the end) that I get tangled up pretty quickly. So please have patience with this 'old' newbie  in the early going here. Any quick suggestions or warnings for me to avoid some early pitfalls and keep me from asking some dumb questions. Thanks......

Welcome to the forum.
The only thing I can suggest is to get an audio interface designed for recording if you haven't done so already.
You can connect them via USB or FireWire, whichever your computer has.
Ask here if you have any problems; there's usually someone checking in a few times a day.

And the first thing to do is add your system and soundcard specs in your signature. That way you don't need to rewrite them every time.

Thanks 57 and kalle. The interface is on order. I'll check into that soundcard specs deal. Right now I'm working on two things: 1. Putting a simple tune together using loops (bass and drum) 2. Building a drum kit with each instruments of the kit being on its own track. For now I'm staying away from MIDI. Trying to keep it simple. In the past I was trying to do to much and just ended up with to many loose ends and not knowing what I was trying to do in the first place. I was all over the MIDI and audio universe so to speak. Thanks again. What I was curious about is how to hook up and set up my drum machine to the studio and use at as an audio input plug in (I think that's the right term.) I have a MIDI cable and my son loaded some software on my laptop to help me do that. When I hooked up my keyboard a couple of days ago I did get some sounds but was lost after that (again I was poking around other things so I just got myself in a can of worms.). The Dr. 670 has got a ton of drum loops and drum kits. Plus I would like to use that to lay down some drum patterns using that on the kit defined over a number of tracks. Again I would like to do that audio and not MIDI at this point. But maybe it has to be MIDI?!? Don't know...... Still learning and poking around......

Well, if you want to use the drum machine, you're going to have to sync it up with Sonar via MIDI. Look in the preferences section because you'll have to tell Sonar to send MIDI timing to the drum machine to follow. It takes a little to set it up, but it does work.

cylinders... awesome.
hi, my name is Mario and i too am a FNG with sonar software. i am also using sonar xl7 and i am learning how to use it.
today was actually my first day i played around with it after about 2 yrs of having the software. you and i should team up and hopefully we can learn together as we go along. my current issue is that the "recording" process stops after the 2 bars of the metronome... any ideas?
