Emptying deleted clips trashcan in X1?
In my ancient version of Nuendo when I cut or deleted unwanted clips they would go to a "Trashcan" type section that needed to be emptied to keep the project size down and avoid wasting disk space. This was there as a safe guard in case you needed to restore a clip but obviously often times when I'm deleting something I just want it gone. Is there a similar process in X1? If so how would I do this? Thanks.

Permanently deleting clips is best done from the Utilities menu and selecting "Clean Audio Folder". That's the only safe way to permanently delete clips.

Thanks, FBB. I figured that might be where I'd do that. Playing with it now. This is VERY different than what I am used to. Fortunately the dialog had a direct link to the help topics entry on the subject. Reading it now. Cheers.

Okay, so if I am reading this correctly this function scours all of my project files as well as my hard drive(s). Then figures out what audio files originated in X1 and are no longer used in any X1 projects. Then when I delete them they go to Win Recycle Bin. Right? I'm trying to get a track trimmed down so when I export it to CWB all the crud I don't want isn't saved with it. I think I understand... kind of. Thanks again, FBB.

Oh, I see. It's just the ones associated with that track like Nuendo does. That little "Play" feature is cool. Good to check out what's about to be trashed. Awesome. Problem solved. Peace.

I have not yet had the courage to use the "Clean Audio Folders" function. Unless I am mistaken I thought it scoured all the folders and drives looking for cake audio files and deleted them. I did not know it dumped them into the windows recycling bin....(effectively giving you a last chance to restore them should something do wrong.) With huge hard drives and storage options becoming so inexpensive, this has really not been much of a priority to me at this point. In addition, I keep the songs and files in major folders named by the year. So if I wish to archive it after a year or two I simply drag it to an external drive and free up the on computer HD space.

@Guitarhacker... It gives you a list of what it has found and you can choose specific files to delete or delete them all in bulk. It also has a little play button so you can check out the files first. So if you have guitar track or something that was a complete flub you can listen to it, know what it is and just delete that one clip. Try recording a scrap track, delete it, run the cleaner on the project and use the play button in the cleaner to find the track, then delete it. BTW the manual SAYS it sends them to the Recycle Bin but I didn't check yet so be careful with important stuff.

With the project open, just do a save as to your desktop. Make sure you've got "copy audio with project" checked Sonar will only copy across to the new location the files being referenced by the project, everything else will be ignored. Now go back and delete the original project from your Cakewalk Projects folder. Now open up the one you saved on your desktop and re-save it to the CP folder.

That seems like a bit of a roundabout way of doing things but whatever works. I kind of did that anyway but not for that specific purpose (was just getting it together to transfer to another computer). I'll remember that for future housecleaning. Thanks guys.

Keep in mind that Sonar X1 is a nondestructive editor that will not on its own delete anything. It is a philosophy that started a long time ago with Sonar. It was one of the very first that did true nondestructive editing, therefore why it has the Clean Audio Tool. However, in the past that tool had a bad habit of deleting the wrong things sometimes. I believe it is working well enough now. But I never needed to use it. I just buy a new HD.

Yeah, I've got a terabyte and a half of storage (minus space taken up by programs) so I'm okay for a while but once I really start going I could see space getting used quickly. I just want to get into the habit of getting rid of anything I won't use so I'm not looking at a big mess in a year or so and have forgotten what's what. That happened on my old system and it was a pain to clean it all up.

Defiantly use this feature to save time & space. Another tip is to use the 'apply trimming' when splitting audio clips. Some of my heavily split audio / edited projects that should be around 1-2 gigs can go upwards of 5-10 gigs if I don't apply trimming, then clean audio folder afterwards. That really adds up when backing up a cd's worth of material to several mediums. I backup finished projects to several backup drives + cd's so I do it quite often.

I will certainly look at the manual on this to see and understand it better. I could probably stand to run this on my lappy to clear up some space for sure.
