Transposing
Apologies for double posting, I lost the first reply. I have two virtual basses and one comes out an octave lower, how do I fix that permanently? Thanks - rev

revnice1 I have two virtual basses and one comes out an octave lower, how do I fix that permanently? Which softsynths are you using? Different softsynths are not consistent in this respect, but some of them have built-in transpose or octave adjustment. But you can transpose the MIDI clip using Process>Transpose. Alternatively, you could select the notes in PRV and move them up or down manually.

This is pretty common, different sample libraries having a different definition of which octave is which, sometimes even within the same collection. No universal definition exists for what MIDI note corresponds to what octave. It's only a minor inconvenience; when I'm auditioning different patches I just use the transpose box in the MIDI track's header. That's the one labeld "#b". Enter -12 to shift down an octave, 12 to shift up an octave. It's nondestructive, as it doesn't actually alter the MIDI data, just translates it during playback. Once you've settled on a bass patch, you can permanently transpose the track using Process -> Transpose.

I've set up a keybinding to access the Transpose dialog box. All you do then is type in the number of semitones you want to shift your Midi data by.

Thanks to all. I found it easier to use two tracks of MIDI, each one assigned to a different bass and one track transposed to suit. Then all you need to do is Mute one of them to audition the other. But - I can't believe there isn't a permanent fix. I'm using Basis and the Scarbee Pre-Bass. I might be forced to look in the manual :) Flipper - is that the Dirac equation in your message signature?

I don't understand the question - what do you mean by "there isn't a permanent fix" What is it that's broken? Transpose works as it's always done.
